It may be a spy thriller, but Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of John Le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy could have some juice this awards season.  Focus Features has set the flick for November 18th and buzz is already building up around Gary Oldman’s performance as George Smiley, a semi-retired spy tasked with rooting out a mole in MI-6.  The powerhouse cast also includes Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, Stephen Graham, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The international trailer for the film has been released and it looks like Alfredson has really nailed the suspense of the story while side-stepping the predictable tropes of the spy genre.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Toby Jones and John Hurt.  Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy opens in the UK on September 16th, and it’s possible the flick could show up at the Venice Film Festival and/or the Toronto International Film Festival.

Here’s the synopsis for John Le Carre’s novel:

It is now beyond doubt that a mole, implanted decades ago by Moscow Centre, has burrowed his way into the highest echelons of British Intelligence. His treachery has already blown some of its most vital operations and its best networks. It is clear that the double agent is one of its own kind. But which one? George Smiley is assigned to identify him. And once identified, the traitor must be destroyed. [Amazon]

  1. That’s an amazing cast. It’s like every Harry Potter cameo rolled into one flick. The mole has to be Voldemort, right?

  2. @JLC, isn’t Voldemort Ralph Fiennes? (I dont watch HP so not sure). He was attached to this at one point, but not anymore. Sad Fassbender left the project too, that would’ve been epic.

I noticed IMDB doesnt list Hurt or Jones in the cast, but there they are in the trailer heh, glad to see them!

  3. I see another Oscar nomination for Firth (Supporting Actor), and a good possibility for an Oscar nomination for Oldman. He deserves it, he can no longer be ignored.

  4. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  5. You’d need an Ikea warehouse to shelve all the awards this cast has won. Looks like a stellar adaptation as well. I am looking forward to it.

  6. It seems like, with British movies, if one actor from Harry Potter is in it, at least 2 or 3 more are going to be in it as well.

  7. Fuck a duck this film has an amazing cast. I’ve been waiting impatiently for this one – trailer makes it look tres gripping. Yay! Psychological thrills!

  8. A person essentially assist to make significantly posts I might state. This is the very first time I frequented your website page and thus far? I surprised with the analysis you made to make this actual post extraordinary. Wonderful job!
