New Images from Spielberg’s THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN

New images from Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. The photos come via Empire Magazine who were to first to release a handful of images last week. There are a few new shots, one of which gives us our first look at the Thom(p)son twins (played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) and the thief Silk (Toby Jones) and the mysterious Barnaby (Joe Starr).  The film is produced by Peter Jackson and is the first in a planned trilogy.

Tintin stars Bell in the titular role, along with Daniel Craig as Red Rackham, Gad Elmaleh and Mackenzie Crook. The motion picture was filmed utilizing 3D motion capture. Tintin was created by Georges Remi, or “Herge” as he is known by fans. The film adaptation is set for release December 2011. Hit the jump for a brief synopsis.

Here’s the synopsis:

Tintin and his friends discover directions to a sunken ship commanded by Capt. Haddock’s ancestor and go off on a treasure hunt.

These new pictures are enough to get me fired up for this movie. While not a devout Tintin fan, I remember watching the cartoon series (1991-1992) way back when I was a wee lad, and thoroughly enjoying it.

Spielberg’s take looks promising, offering mystery, adventure and some nifty computer FX to bring the character to life. Check out the shot with Tintin pointing a gun at Barnaby. The lighting, the dark shadows, the camera angle – classic Spielberg.

I must say I was extremely disappointed with Indy 4 – with Tintin, War Horse and the recently announced Robopocalypse, I may yet forgive The Beard for his past sins.

Here are the pics (via Omelete and Empire):

Isn’t there some sort of copyright-infringement issue with posting scans from Empire’s exclusive article and depriving them of magazine sales? There ought to be…

And I thought these things couldn’t get more ugly and inept after that travesty A Christmas Carol.

Thankfully, not many have heard of this character, so it’s most likely going to disappear without a trace at the box office.

Wow, you have really got to get some things in this order:
      1. Taste
      2. Intelligence
      3. talent (sorry you have to be born with it)
      4. A girlfriend
      5. A room outside of your mum’s house

It looks soooo much better than a Christmas carol, the modelling lighting, animation and rendering is eons ahead. Sigh…so many morons who know nothing of movie making or animation expressing opinions

Wow. You’re really butthurt eh? What in Scott’s comment called for any of that? I guess the one that needs to follow those suggestions is yourself, raging asstwat.

Spielberg should have made this as a live action film. I am somewhat disappointed he opted for an “easier” direction!

    • Rashad @

Live action would look really dumb. Have you seen the old live action tintin? The makeup is terrible and obvious

If he wanted to go in an easier direction, he could have just did a regular animated film and not performance capture.

      • Mr... @

Well, if the old Tin Tin live action was horrible, he should have made a better one! With the current new technology available, the makeup wouldn’t seem obvious and terrible. (e.g Benjamin Button. It turned out fine).
I just read an article in this site saying he wanted to make Harry Potter animated! I imagine that if he got to make it his way, the Harry Potter series wouldn’t be quite as popular as they are.
In all fairness, every director should be able to do whatever they want with their films. So perhaps in the future someone will make a good live action Tin Tin!

      • ed @

Harry Potter didn’t have an established stylised ‘look’ to the characters that distinguished it from other franchises, live action worked well.

Benjamin button’s ‘makeup’ was CG you fool. It was a complete CG replacement with motion capture technology.

      • Ed @

To be specific “It was a complete CG head replacement”

Wow! Name calling? How very mature and intelligent of you! Its just a simple discussion. We are all entitled to our own opinions. Agree, disagree, it doesn’t change a bloody thing!

      • BQ @

nicely said ed – benjamin button was good ‘makeup’, hahahaha… well I guess that shows what a good job DD did with the CG…. avatar was good makeup too aye, all filmed in hawaii :P …. if making tintin CG was the ‘Easier direction’ it wouldn’t be taking hundreds of people 3 years to make…

      • Heylo_99 @

Good old performance capture, keepin it creepy and plastic!

      • Ed @

Wow, you can tell that without seeing them move? Yeah Avatar was soooooo plastic.

    • Ed @

You’re kidding right? Firstly CG is not an ‘easy’ option, years of hard work from the top creative/technical people in the world create the photoreal CG.
Secondly you can use CG to maintain the stylised look of Herge’s characters whilst still keeping it photoreal, an incredibly hard compromise which appears to have been extremely well done.

      • Mr... @

OK I agree CG isn’t an easy option. But this is Steven Spielberg, we are taking about a Genius filmmaker!! I was just expecting a brilliantly done live action Tintin. Anyway, there’s no need crying over spilt milk! I am a fan of tintin and will still watch it.

      • BQ @

If Steven is a genius (i agree) then you should trust his decision…

      • Mr... @

Hence my reason to still wanting to see CG Tintin!

    this looks amazing:D

I thought it kinda looked like the animation used before in Polar Express and A Christmas Carol but I think this one definitely has its own feel to it:D

let’s be hopeful. remember WETA is doing this. and they did Avatar. also, remember how Avatar looked in its first trailer. FXs aren’t finished yet. let’s wait come october or november

    • Skyjedi2005 @

How is that a good thing, thanks to being shot on video even the humans in avatar looked like plastic.

      • Ed @

Shot on video? Are you retarded? It’s shot on film. The humans in Avatar looked amazing.
Wow, some people should keep their uneducated opinions to themselves

      • BQ @

Sadly the pace camera system used in avatar is indeed HD ‘video’

  7. Skyjedi2005 @

    Another ugly cgi movie.

  8. rboticon @

The last picture makes it look as if Spielberg has decided to blend the narratives of ‘Secret of the Unicorn’ and its predecessor ‘The Crab with the Golden Claws’. This is the album where Tintin first meets Captain Haddock, and they end up wandering through the desert looking for help and water after getting caught in a storm and crashing their hijacked sea-plane.

  9. Aaron Sullivan @

Starting to look very good to me. Spielberg directing something like this is very intriguing.

Pssst, Ed. Don’t feed the trolls!
