Paramount has released a trailer for James Cameron’s 3D update of his 1997 film Titantic.  I think the verdict is in on this movie, and since the trailer is on my computer, I can’t really comment on the 3D.  However, I was reminded of how much I hate “My Heart Will Go On.”  Click here for what Steve though of the footage he saw last month.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Jonathan Hyde, Victor Garber, Bernard Hill, David Warner, Gloria Stuart, and Bill Paxton.  Titanic opens in 3D on April 6, 2012.  It will also be re-released in 2D.

HOLLYWOOD, CA (May 19, 2011) – Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment jointly announced today that James Cameron’s “TITANIC” will be re-released worldwide on April 6, 2012.

The release, which marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic setting sail (April 10th), will present the film in 3D for the first time ever.

Written, directed and produced by Cameron, “TITANIC” is the second highest grossing movie of all time. It is one of only three films to have received a record 11 Academy Awards(R) including Best Picture and Best Director; and launched the careers of stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

Called “A spectacular demonstration of what modern technology can contribute to dramatic storytelling” by Variety upon its release in 1997, the long in the works 3D conversion is being overseen by Cameron and his Lightstorm producing partner Jon Landau who produced the hit movie.

Said Cameron, “There’s a whole generation that’s never seen ‘TITANIC’ as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be ‘TITANIC’ as you’ve never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike.”

“This new presentation of Paramount’s top-grossing film is particularly special because 2012 is the 100th anniversary of our studio. Paramount has had the pleasure of introducing audiences to some of the all-time classics of cinema during that century of moviemaking and we cannot think of a better way to mark the occasion than with this re-release of ‘TITANIC’,” said Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures.

Commented Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairmen and CEOs, Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman: “Our 30-plus year relationship with Jim Cameron and Lightstorm has been enormously rewarding, from ‘Aliens’ to ‘Avatar’, and the global phenomenon of ‘TITANIC’ remains one of the greatest sources of pride in our history. We are pleased to allow a new generation of audiences to experience the film in its brilliant digital restoration in 3D.”

Anyone who goes to see this is living in the past. Titanic came out 14 years ago and James Cameron is still milking it. Until recently, he was still milking Avatar as well. All those billions of dollars are not enough for him.

Hey it’s not about the issue of “milking money”. It’s about re-experiencing Titanic on the big screen. Millions of people love Titanic and they want to re-experience the movie event of a lifetime. Titanic is art.

To anyone wondering why this is getting re-released after only 14 years – look at the date of the movie release… and then think of the subject of the movie…

April 6, 2012 is the 100 year anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking, which is the most well-known and one of the more important maritime disasters in human history…

Id’ rather go see Titanic again than the remake of Spiderman, or Superman, or Alvin and the Chipmunks 4 or whatever…

  • IllusionOfLife

“The world’s most beloved and acclaimed film.” Oh god, I’m going to throw up.

  • Ryan

How about the fact I was 9 when this was released and I still haven’t seen it? It’s the ONLY Cameron film I haven’t watched. Yes I know it will be sappy and romantic and overly long but I’m going

That’s great, people like to hate on this movie but its pretty much flawless film-making and your going to enjoy it on the big screen.

This trailer made me laugh for a number of reasons…

    1) “World’s most beloved film”…really, Jim?
    2) “When the ship docks, I’m getting off with you.” …Didn’t you already “get off” with him?
    3) Hollywood has run out of ideas so they’re working backwards. It used to be “From the director of Titanic……Avatar” now it’s “From the director of Avatar…Titanic.”
    4) Why is it that Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” sounds exactly like Leona Lewis’ “I See You” from Avatar…

Why ? Because you don’t know who James Horner is.
He is the sole composer who plagiarizes himself.
Listen to Troy, and you will find also lot of similitude in some themes of Avatar and Braveheart and Titanic, and….

It’s incredibly bizarre seeing a new trailer that contains the same footage of a movie released 14 years ago.

  • sense 11

I remember the second I saw the first trailer for this movie back when it came out I instantly knew it was going to be a massive hit, you could feel it. It was number one at the box office for about 3 months straight, absolutely ridiculous money maker.

    …he dies.

The trailer gave away the whole movie. Lame.

ofcourse you hate the song MATT. you hate everything!

i hope the 3D is done right. i saw PINA last week and that must be the GREATEST 3D FILM EVER. because it’s not about “pop-out”. it was about depth. it was like watching from a dance on the stage. or sitting in a bence and watching the dancers perform in the street. i hope this is not about Kate’s boobs popping out in 3D. but Kate’s boobs being infront of you. feeling like in the same room. you could just walk towards her and touch those beauty. LOL!
