After watching Terrence Malick‘s twirling train wreck of a picture, To the Wonder, I was left wondering what distributor would pick it up.  The movie lacked the awards power of Malick’s previous efforts, and his movies aren’t easy sells to begin with.  Today, Deadline reports that Magnolia is up for the challenge, and will distribute the film for a multi-platform release in 2013.  Most, if not all, Magnolia films hit VOD before getting a theatrical release, but Deadline says To the Wonder will be released first in theaters.  The movie will probably draw in the Malick die-hards since all of the imagery and tone is unmistakably the auteur’s work.  The trailer probably won’t convey how the movie is an utter chore, and even though it’s Malick’s second-shortest movie, it feels like his longest.

For those unfamiliar with the plot, it revolves around a European woman (Olga Kurylenko) and her tumultuous relationship with an Oklahoman man (Ben Affleck).  Occasionally, a priest (Javier Bardem) has scenes where he talks about how unhappy he is.  Godspeed, Magnolia.

  1. once again Matt you have failed to be an unbiased reporter/movie critic. just report the news, don’t pile on your hatred. haters gonna hate

    • But he gave Loper a B… Maybe if Malick inserted cool time travel and action to keep Matt awake, he’d have liked it more. Or, at least, understood it.

    • How can he be an unbiased movie critic? That’s a contradiction.

As far as reporting the news, here’s a scoop. Malick should try still photography, and leave motion pictures to someone who understands motion. (And maybe write a cogent story, instead of “Jessica Chastain twirls around the yard in a sundress for five minutes”)

  2. GOLDBERG: QUIT ALREADY.

YOU ARE THE WORST JOURNALIST WORKING RIGHT NOW AND YOU NEED TO CEASE PLAGUING THID SITE WITH YOUR GARBAGE.

DO US ALL A FAVOR AND QUIT.

  3. The Emperor has no clothes.
Malick is completely nuts. His recent films have been over-indulgent pieces of crap. I have no idea why anyone finances them, wants to act in them, or watches them. For some reason critics give him a pass because he used to make good films and then disappeared. So they treat everything he puts out like its a masterpiece. Thank you Matt for pointing out the truth.

  4. In the end Malick make movies to express himself his views, a lot of directors do that but he does it more personally, that’s why we don’t usually gets his films.
