Director Ang Lee’s gorgeous-looking adaptation of Life of Pi is shaping up to be a major awards contender this year, but official word has now come down that the film’s biggest star has been cut from the film.  Lee filled his international cast with relative unknowns, but he went with Tobey Maguire to tackle a small role as a writer who interviews the protagonist.  We’d heard rumblings that Maguire was no longer in the film, and THR now confirms that the role was recast after the director felt that Maguire’s performance “wasn’t working.”  Hit the jump for more.

life-of-pi-posterApparently Maguire’s presence was a bit jarring in the film, as his starpower overshadowed the rest of the cast even though his role was minor.  Lee reshot the scenes with actor Rafe Spall (Prometheus, Anonymous) taking over the part, but there’s no bad blood between the director and Maguire, as the actor reiterated his support for Lee and the film in a statement to THR:

“I fully support Ang’s decision to go a different direction for this role in Life of Pi. Ang shared a lot of the film with me, and what I saw was absolutely beautiful.”

Lee himself shot back with more kind words about the decision:

“To be consistent with the other casting choices made for the film, I decided to go with an entirely international cast. I very much admire Tobey and look forward to working with him again in the future.”

It’s hard to argue with Lee’s logic, and I doubt the film suffers without Maguire in what sounds more like a cameo role than anything.  The 3D pic looks wildly ambitious, and we’ll have the first reactions to the finished film when Life of Pi opens the New York Film Festival on September 28th.  The drama then opens nationwide on November 21st.

  1. Maybe there was a concern that audiences would confuse his ‘writer’ role with his Peter Parker role. Maguire probably brought the same mild-manneredness to this part. Not that he can’t play different stuff, e.g. Brothers.

    • Never mind this year, Maguire’s career has been going downhill lately. Brothers bombed, he was booted off Rise of the Plant of the Apes, he lost the lead role in the Bourne Legacy, and most of his movies have been ether shelved or delayed.

Unless he plans to start looking around for good TV pilot scripts, his five seconds of fame are almost up!
