Paramount’s upcoming crime thriller, starring Tom Cruise, has changed its title from One Shot to Jack Reacher. The Christopher McQuarrie film, itself an adaptation of the Lee Child novel, “One Shot,” stars Cruise in the now title role. In the novel, Jack Reacher is an ex-military investigator tasked with tracking down a serial sniper. Known for his imposing size (6’5”, 250 lbs), Cruise was seen as an odd choice for the role, but was supported by the author himself. Jack Reacher also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall, David Oyelowo and Werner Herzog as the villain. Keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks for the first trailer to drop. Hit the jump for more on Jack Reacher, which opens this December 21st.
According to THR, Cruise fueled speculation that One Shot would get a title change when he kept referring to the project as Jack Reacher earlier this year at CinemaCon. We’ve also presented somewhat of a confirmation of the title change in these promotional posters from Cannes. For a look at Cruise in action, check out these set photos in Pittsburgh from a few months back. McQuarrie will direct the adaptation from his own script. Here’s a look at the synopsis from the “One Shot” novel:
Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.
And sure enough, ex—military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter–a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right–and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.
Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning–and then beat him shot for shot. [Amazon]
