The disappointing box office for Knight and Day ($74 million domestic; $190 million worldwide) has led Paramount to cut Tom Cruise’s up-front salary for Mission: Impossible 4. Vulture reports that Cruise has “agreed to be paid ‘scale’ (that is, Screen Actors Guild minimum payment) for his acting in the franchise’s fourth installment, but will “get a nice back-end after cash break-even.” Basically, Cruise gets nothing up-front but will make money after the studio recoups its investment. With an expected budget of $135 million and let’s say another $135m for P&A, Cruise still probably comes out with a fat paycheck.
I’ll leave the arguments about Tom Cruise’s star power to others. I’m not his agent or an executive. I think he’s a good actor with plenty of charisma and he basically carried Knight and Day. I’m glad that he’ll return for Mission: Impossible 4 (which comes out on December 16, 2011) and I’m even happier that Brad Bird (The Incredibles) is directing.

It's like the nic cage deal, you know? I watched Next last night and it's just fucking funny, how this guy with a terrible toupee is seeing the future and saving the world. I'd rather see nic cage and tom cruise do crazy roles. You know? Tropic Thunder and Bad Lieutenant. They aren't the action heroes they used to be. MI 1 was good but after that they all kinda sucked. JJ did what he could but come on. Just give us what we want and make fun of yourself Tom, let it go.
tom is the man… give him his due. He's essentially the greatest leading man of our generation… besides ALL THE RIGHT MOVES, what movie hasn't been good that he's in? Valkyrie was so-so but still very entertaining!!
I don't want Tom Cruise to make fun of himself. He is an icon not a cast member from the Jersey Shore. Besides why should he let go of trying to make good movies? It's not like he is Nic Cage doing every little thing.
whatever you'se guys. Tom Cruise used to be the greatest leading man of whatever. get over it, he's old, even though he looks exactly the same. And i'll tell you what movies haven't been good. umm war of the worlds, eyes wide shut, vanilla sky, minority report, valkarye as you said, mission impossible 2 blew chunks, take your pick. Magnolia was good but only because paul thomas anderson made him into what? A crazy character. but i will admit, all the right moves, days of thunder, you know, the old shit is still awesome. Risky business, def. But lately. yawn, bro. Yawn
I think it's clear that his name doesn't bring 20 mil to a movie anymore, so he really shouldn't be paid that much. His public persona simply angers or frustrates too many potential viewers. As an actor he seems to give his all, so I can't fault him there. He was awesome in War of the Worlds even though I have problems with the movie and he was pretty great in Knight and Day, honestly.
Knight and Day was a fun, fluffy, silly movie with guns. I think it will stand up to multiple viewings if you feel like watching something that makes you smile but does little else. I'm okay with that. Didn't really need to see it in the theater, but I found it had value.
Mission Impossible 3 was a great time for me, but I think JJ valued Tom as the hero in that a little too strongly. I'm pretty sure everyone would be happier if it was a bit more of an ensemble piece. I'm hoping Brad Bird goes in that direction and I like this particular news item in that light.
Minority Report was a masterpiece. You're attacking him for the movies he's in. He was good in all the ones you mentioned. And it isn't like he starred in The Last Airbender. You can say you didn't like them but to say those movie weren't good is a stretch. Each one of those were directed by respected Film makers and maybe they missed the mark, but they certainly tried.
My point is TOM was good in them and he still has a lot left in him.
yeah, you got a point there
“His public persona simply angers or frustrates too many potential viewers.”
I have yet to figure out why this is. I know he's a little out-there, but really there are far worse entertainers who still garner all the success. I just don't get it.
He is super as the psycho-misogynist guru in MAGNOLIA, he is intense in Michael Mann's COLLATERAL. And have you seen BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY? A FEW GOOD MEN? He is not the greatest actor but he gives everything he got in his best roles. He did poke at the “megalomania” aspect of his persona in TROPIC THUNDER. No, he doesn't take himself seriously.
He followed up his odd behavior on Oprah with public attacks on psychiatric medications. It wasn't just what he said or did, it was how he presented himself while doing it. His intensity that serves him so well on screen scared people when it started showing up in reality. Or something like that.
I just don't care how much money Tom Cruise takes the movie should have good story then only I am sold. The only reason wanting to watch this movie is Brad Bird's work he is good director they have hired and I love his work.
Well, Vulture has updated their article, which is “Cruise is not receiving “scale” but a substantially reduced upfront payment relative to his previous outings with the M:I films” So another anonymous source fail.
i dont understand why they picked brad bird.
the third movie was obviously the best one in the series, i think they should have brought JJ again, and if not him, another actionsuspense director and not a kindergarten director…
I think it was the OPRAH thing that changed his image. Some people just want to hate on people for being successful and happy. I'm not going to fault the guy for the Oprah thing. I mean, the dude was just happy. Over the top, sure. “Odd” I don't think so. The guy was talking about the woman he loved. Cut him some slack.
The whole medication stuff had to do more with Scientology. BUt I don't want to get into the religion thing.
His behavior was a bit odd but I also give him plenty of slack as he'd had a bunch of media attention around the relationship already and the hype up on that show and the audience of women just going insane every time he moved an eyebrow. I think he was overwhelmed.
His over the top reactions there, however, led him right into a huge problem when he began his condescending tirade against Matt Lauer about the drugs and then the public back and forth with Brooke Shields. It just really highlighted how serious he was about his beliefs and it made many, many people uneasy with him.
I'm not saying whether it's fair or making any judgement on him personally. I will say I enjoy it when people do their job really well, and he does. Whether or not an actor's job includes juggling their own public image is probably the real question.
Brad Bird has made two of my favorite films and Ratatouille which is also great. They are films for all ages, each of them — except maybe confused teens who are trying to shed their childhood and don't know how. He has shown amazing mastery in directing film with a laser focus on the development of characters and story. That's something most films lack, so… yeah, I'm excited about him getting into live action and while I enjoyed watching JJ's debut in filmmaking and think he's growing into one of the best directors out there, Brad Bird is my first choice in this matter.
I think Cage was amazing in kick ass though!
Tom Cruise has still got it, it's just that he has yet to top himself so his films are dissapointing, even if they aren't bad. Brad Bird doesn't know the first thing about action and I didn't sign up for a mission impossible movie for it's character development. At least it stands a chance of being better than it's predecessors though, they were all quite disappointing except for the first.
Brad Bird doesn't know the first thing about action? The Incredibles has the best super hero action sequences on film, imo. He nailed the action for the finale of his first feature, Iron Giant, and he even included a nice chase scene in the middle of Ratatouille. What examples of poor action are you citing for your claim?
