Pictures have surfaced of Tom Cruise, as Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt, filming a stunt for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol–the fourth picture in the series–that is sure to send his insurance rates as high as the building he’s shown dangling from. The scene in question involves what appears to be a foot chase across the vertical exterior of the tallest scraper on this planet, the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai which stands at a staggering 828 meters. To achieve this feat, Cruise and his pursuer were harnessed to safety lines running out from a top floor window while the action was shot by cameras in a helicopter hovering a little too close for comfort.

Hit the jump for images of the stunt and comments from Cruise.  The Brad Bird (The Incredibles)-helmed film also stars Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and Paula Patton. It is slated for a December 16th, 2011 release.

The stunt comes as no surprise given Cruise’s comments in a press conference last week:

“I’ll be spending many days, many hours on the side of this building.  I can’t give you details, but I will be up there.”

Well, we have the details now. Tom Cruise has never been one to shy away from a stunt though, particularly with the Mission: Impossible series. His philosophy (via Mail Online):

“I want to entertain the audience and part of making these movies is doing my own stunts…I love having the camera right there in front of me, where you can see me holding a shot all the way through… I think it adds to the excitement for an audience…It’s something that is challenging to do and fun for me. There’s always that adrenaline before you do a stunt. But we go through everything, we prepare and we make sure we are ready.”

It’s a shame more action stars don’t share the same sentiment. Thankfully for popcorn-chomping moviegoers, the 48-year-old Cruise still doesn’t bat an eye when a scene requires some risky business (see what I did there?).

    • I’ve never quite understood the hate either. He’s a pretty good actor, and these pictures really actually boost my opinion of him.

      • Agreed, not sure why all the hate… he really hasnt made any bad films, actually all his movies are pretty decent and saying alot for a 25+ year career

  3. COME ON! There is no insurance company in this world wich will tolerate this! He’s a f*cking stunt and later will replace his face with CGI!

  4. Wow – Tom Cruise has outdone even himself. He has amassed enough experience to be forgiven by the public if he doesn’t do his own stunts, but he still insists on doing it. That is the mark of a true professional.

    • I still call suspected shenanigans. I’ve been there and from the pics and what I remember I think the shots are not connected. Meaning the running guy and the pics of Cruise going by the observation deck are different set ups. Running guy is probably not TC but still props to him for keeping it at least partially real.

  5. Tom Cruise is fucking awesome. I don’t care about all the crazy movie star stuff hes involved in off screen. He always delivers a good performance, even in the handful of bad movies he has made. Well maybe more then a handful.

  6. i cnt wait 4 this mission impossible.
its too bad JJ Abrams isnt directing this 1 but @least he’s producing
i hope it still keeps it high energy like the 3rd film

  7. Holy sh*t…I wonder if the wind was messing up his hair at that height? That’s pretty bad-ass, and seems more than a little unnecessary given the technology we have available these days.

Still, TC might be crazy in real life…but he obviously wants to give people a great movie, so keep kickin ass dude.

  8. Lots of people hate on cruise because of his scientology background and some of his statements reguarding anti depressants. As a christian, our beliefs may differ, but he has the right to believe what he wishes, that doesnt make me right or Tom wrong.Cruise seems like a genuinely good person and anyone who misses one of his performances because of this reason is really missing out.He is an amazingly gifted actor and i love the MI movies! And with tJeremy Renner on board as well,I cant wait.Renner is the next great star.

  9. Cruise is a good guy. I had the chance to meet him as an extra on war of the world’s. I was standing next to him during a couple of takes and he had everybody cracking up when he recited the song when i move you move by rapper ludachris. Not to mention he donated a lot of money to the town in upstate N.Y. were we were filming.

  10. i’ve heard rumors that jeremy renner is taking the franchise over and that cruise won’t star in MI:4. is any of that true? (seems odd to put TC at risk like this only for him to not star in the flick.)

  11. 80 feet or 8000 feet, you fall and it’s the same end result. He’s nuts, why even risk a life of wealth for a lame sequel?

  12. the sequel is not a lame. it might be you who is lame and couldn’t understand real professionalism. you are the one who is nuts. you shaky balls. what? can you do the same thing? i doubt that. oh yeah? I know you can afford to dangle yourself up on a tree. Are you richer than any Hollywood stars? wew
