Tom Hanks has had a long and fruitful relationship with HBO, particularly when it comes to miniseries. In the past he's been an executive producer for Olive Kitteridge, John Adams, The Pacific, and Band of Brothers. He also is tied to the upcoming Lewis and Clark miniseries, and possibly a third Band of Brothers that would focus on the air force.

Speaking of flight … that brings us to his latest project, with his Playtone parter Gary Goetzman. According to Deadline, HBO has acquired the rights to David McCollough's book The Wright Brothers. McCollough himself has also had a fruitful partnership with HBO and Hanks in the past: the exceptional miniseries John Adams, based on his work, starring Paul Giamatti.

McCullough's The Wright Brothers follows the story of Wilbur and Orville Wright, who went from bicycle repairmen in Ohio to aeronautic engineers. In 1903, in North Carolina's Outer Banks, the course of history was changed when the two successfully invented the first viable flying machine to carry a pilot. And now … well, you know where we are with it now.

Given both McCullough's exceptional talents in crafting engaging historical narratives and the list of truly great television that have come from Hanks' partnership with HBO, there's really no doubt that this latest project will be anything but a winner.
