Production is underway on Chronicle and Fantastic Four director Josh Trank’s dramatic take on the life of gangster Al Capone, and star Tom Hardy has revealed a first look at himself as the notorious figure. Written by Trank, Fonzo focused on 47-year-old Capone who has spent nearly a decade in prison. Dementia rots his brain, and his mind becomes a mishmash of harrowing memories from his violent past.

It’s a unique take on the gangster genre, if that’s even what Trank is going for, but Hardy predictably looks pretty incredible here. This looks to be a screen test or costume fitting of some sort, so this isn’t a final shot of Hardy as Capone (hence the uncovered tattoos), but it is an intriguing peek at what is sure to be a fascinating performance.

Trank somewhat disappeared after the Fantastic Four fiasco, as the filmmaker publicly disowned the Fox superhero movie after reports of production issues and clashing creative visions swirled in the press. He subseuqently left/was removed from an unspecified Star Wars spinoff, but he landed Hardy for Fonzo and one imagines the filmmaker has something to prove with this new film, so it should be mighty interesting.

Check out the image of Tom Hardy as Al Capone below, as revealed on Hardy’s Instagram. The film also stars Linda Cardellini, Matt Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan, and Kathrine Narducci. A release date has not yet been set.

Here’s the official synopsis for Fonzo:

A ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Al “Fonzo” Capone (Hardy) was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore.  At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Capone’s mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.
