Tom Hardy is set to reunite with his Inception director Christopher Nolan for an unspecified role in Batman 3Deadline says it’s a leading role but that they’re keeping it secret beyond that.  However, they say it’s a reasonable assumption that Hardy would be playing a villain.  But who’s the villain?  The great thing about Hardy is that he’s versatile enough to not really give any indication.  He could be The Riddler, Killer Croc, or perhaps another villain you wouldn’t normally think of (somewhere, the world’s lone Killer Moth fan quietly prays).

Hardy is currently attached to play Mad Max in Mad Max: Fury Road, but as we previously reported, filming has been delayed until 2012 which frees up Hardy’s schedule considerably.  He’s also attached to McG’s action-romantic-comedy This Means War with Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine, as well as Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with Gary Oldman and Colin Firth.  Hit the jump for a brief update on what we know about Batman 3 thus far.  Batman 3 is slated for release on July 20, 2012.

Here’s a brief rundown on what we know about Batman 3:

Personally, I’m jazzed about Hardy coming on board.  He’s a fantastic actor and if you need convincing, you probably haven’t seen him in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson (which is available to Watch Instantly on Netflix).

Now THERE’S someone I’d buy as The Riddler. The whole Joseph Gordon-Levitt thing struck me as fan wanking because people said “Hey, he’s an actor I know and he looks good in a suit!”

Either way, whatever role Hardy plays I’m confident he’ll knock it out of the park.

Hope he’s not Riddler, theres too many actors out there that would be perfect casting as Riddler. Such as Crispin Glover etc..

Though Tom Hardy would be great as say Tommy Elliot (HUSH) or maybe Firefly if they want to go low profile villain.

    Bane. Bane.

    Bane.

That picture above makes me wonder if he could be Calendar Man from Long Halloween. There are rumors that Arkham is the centerpoint of the third film.

Dude, Bronson is a twisted movie! Hardy is full frontal in more than a few shots and he’s beating down prison guards and rottweilers! Did I mention its full frontal. I loved Hardy in Inception. He has incredible range. This is excellent casting news.

He’d be great as anyone. Even an extra.

    FOR BATMAN!

I wouldn’t really say the JGL thing had no basis in fact. It started because of an internal Warner Bros. casting breakdown listing him as ‘interested’ in the part of the riddler.

This is great news, I loved him in Inception!

Warner Bros. has also issued a response to the rumor…”no comment.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, give me Man-bat. Hardy would be a great choice for the tragic character.

I was hoping he would play someone like Brainiac, but as long as he is involved im fine with it, he just better be a villain.

He’d be a great Black Mask

Tom Hardy should and would play a great Victor Zsasz. If Nolan wants a very gritty character that fits in well with the Arkham mythology.
