Exclusive: Tom Hiddleston Talks THE AVENGERS at D23; Says ‘Loki Goes Toe to Toe With Every Superhero’

Tom Hiddleston THE AVENGERS D23 interview slice

If there was any debate if Loki was the main villain in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers movie, Tom Hiddleston ended it today.  That’s because backstage at D23 (essentially Disney’s Comic-Con), I got to speak with Hiddleston and he told me:

“Loki goes toe to toe with every superhero.  I have had a one on one with Robert Downey Jr. A one on one with Chris Hemsworth.  A one on one with Scarlett.  A one on one with Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner and Sam Jackson.  And it’s so exciting to see how the different chemistry is.  Not just between the actors.  So my one on one with Robert becomes a battle of wit’s and words.  My one on one with Chris Hemsworth ends up in both of us knocking ten bells (I think that’s what he said) again because that’s how we communicate.  It’s been the most exciting thing I’ve ever done.  It’s giant and will be amazing.”

Hit the jump to watch the interview.  He also tells a great story about the restaurant Chili’s and seeing movies in Albuquerque.

Finally, look for a lot more video interviews from D23 in the coming hours.

  • 3:10 – Talks about how Loki goes toe to toe in The Avengers with the entire cast.  Says “”Loki goes toe to toe with every superhero.

Tom Hiddleston IS the reason that Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris did so well. Why? BECAUSE HIDDLES.

    • Jennifer

Hiddles is the answer to everything *le swoon*

      • Ellen

Hello fellow Hiddles fan! Fancy seeing you here =P

    • Jennifer

Haha I know, right? It makes me so when other people use “because Hiddles” as an answer, because when I use it everyone just think I’m crazy

      • Ms.H

Ohmigosh i use that all the time too!!! Seriously tom? U ARE the only reason i went to c Midnight in Paris. U had to short of a role! Im sure Hiddlers make up at least 20% of the veiwers who saw MiP. Cant wait for Avengers! AHHHHH!

  • Strong Enough

This could easily be the most cheesiest movie ever or the most badass. Only time will tell. Joss got a lot on his hands.

Dark knight rises, spiderman, avengers, Prometheus, Hobbit

if the world ends in 2012 at least were gonna have some great movies to go out with a bang! ha!

  • Kat

“Dad… I think that’s Thor and Loki” That is so cute! Me, I would sit in the row in front of them at the movies and just stare at Tom and Chris instead of the movie. There… that’s no lie.

I CANNOT WAIT. Argh… How will I exist until I see this movie?

And Tom, you are just too sweet for words, what with the whole Chillis thing and the little kids watching you in the movie theatres…

  • Katy Berry

Hopefully Loki will be killed off in this film like how he should have been at the end of Thor (2011). I hope Loki is not going to be Marvel’s equivalent of Lex Luthor or General Zod.

    • MidgardMortal

      NEVER.

  • Evie

Loki couldn’t be killed off at the end of Thor because the first time
The Avengers ever “assembled” it was against Loki (in the comics) so it’s important to have him in the movie…I really am loving Tom as Loki

Tom Hiddleston seems like a really class actor. He seems genuine and humble. Maybe he’s just that good of an actor but I really like this guy whenever I hear an interview.

    • Max Lichtig

I was filming this interview and he really is. He spoke this way to every other reporter, with all smiles and a genuine desire to talk about his work. Definitely the most organic interview of the day.

The problem for British fans is, we still don’t get this joke about Chili’s! Someone please explain!

    • Max Lichtig

Haha of course; Chili’s is a huge chain restaurant that’s found literally everywhere here in the states that everybody generally sees as “decent” but never “amazing”. So he’s explaining to a group of Americans how good this restaurant is that he thinks they’ve never heard of.

      • Anita

Ah, like the Harvester chain here! I wondered if it was something like that. Thanks for taking the time to reply, Max.

Is it possible to download the interview?

I gotta say…I was well impressed with him as Loki. Wasnt sure how well he was going to be able to deliver on such a…sincerely smug demi-god as Loki. He was fantastic. Some of his lines…especially at the end during the battle on the Bi-Frost…just fantastic. Arrogant, angry, apologetic, & even apothetic…that’s alotta A’s.

Is anyone else having problems um, locating the actual video interview on this web page? It says to “hit the jump” which I know means link, but I can’t find it. All there is is pictures and the summary, and a large white space. I feel like an idiot, but I really want to see this Chili’s comment.

  • Renne

It’s “us knocking ten bells out of each other again”

Hiddles, why are you so adorable?

  • Jessy

A battle of wits with Tony Stark. OMFG, that is going to be freakin’ epic!
I hope that Loki shuts Tony up, then he’d be on Captain America’s good sidexD
Ohh Hiddles, congratulations. You make up about 80% of my life now…probably more….yea-.-

  • Jessy

and yes it’s safe to bet that most people went to watch Midnight In Paris because of Hiddles. I know I did, and lots of other people I know(via tumblr…still counts) lol

    “Hiddles”–I love it!

Tom was incredibly appealing as Loki, first in Thor, but even more so in The Avengers. He made Loki a real person, not a mere cardboard villain. And that thin, pale face, those blue eyes, that black hair (not to mention his beguiling grin)–yeah, Chris Hemsworth might be chiseled, but give me Tom as Loki ANYDAY! :)

  • karen

WOW!!!!! Not only is Tom gorgeous, he is extremely talented. As Lok in Thor he makes you dislike him as well as love him at the same time. He and Chris both bring you right into the movie with them. I cannot wait for the sequel in November. In the Avengers he held that movie together as he played the bad ass. The rest of the cast was great as well. His accent is so sexy as well as his gorgeous blue eyes, oh did I mention his smile, and his slicked back jet black hair. Definately the perfect combinatiion. You have a lifelong fan Tom thanks:-)
