Director Tom Hooper Says “No” to 3D for LES MISERABLES

For those of you hoping for a 3D rendition of “On My Own” from director Tom Hooper’s (The King’s Speech) movie musical Les Miserables, prepare to be disappointed. Back in September, star Hugh Jackman told Steve that 3D was being discussed as a possibility for the adaptation. He revealed that Hooper would probably be shooting some tests to see if the format was a good fit for the film. Now comes word that the director has decided against Les Mis 3D. Hit the jump to find out why.

tom-hooper-imageHooper told BBC that he was “very tempted” to use 3D following some tests, but ultimately decided against it because he wants the film to connect with everyone:

“I slightly worry with 3D that some people will physically struggle with it. If you have a certain type of eyesight it can be more demanding than watching a normal movie. With a two-and-a-half hour film, I didn’t want to make something that anyone might think ‘That’s not for me, because I don’t like the medium’.”

While it’s nice to know that he’s thinking about the audience, it’s a rather different response than I was expecting. It sounds like the visuals may have looked fine to him when doing tests, but he’s worried he won’t reach the same “all-ages” audience that The King’s Speech enjoyed. No matter, you’ve got to respect a filmmaker who actually says “no” to 3D.

Jackman is set as the film’s protagonist Jean Valjean with Russell Crowe poised to play Javert, Anne Hathaway as Fantine, and Eddie Redmayne as Marius. The director told BBC that the casting of Eponine and Cosette would be announced soon. Recently Taylor Swift, Scarlett Johansson, Lea Michele, and Evan Rachel Wood were rumored to be in the running for the former, so it sounds like we’ll finally be getting confirmation on the roles.

Great call by Hooper. If done right, this could be a serious Oscar contender. I knew just from looking at the cast who was playing what character. Good casting and all really good actors.

Rooting for Jackman to get an Oscar nom. He’s got alot of talent but I don’t think has had that one key role to showcase his acting chops yet. Russel Crowe on the other hand, will obviously be brilliant as Javert. And Hathaway simply fits the Fantine role well.

For Eponine. Lea Michelle is an amazing singer but I think Johansson has the attractiveness but proven she can do rough around the edges… so I would probably cast Johansson, provided she is good singer (which Ive heard she actually is).

Not a huge fan of Sasha Cohen but I know his shtick, and for the role of Thenadier, he actually is a great casting choice as well.

Really looking forward to this big time in all its 2D glory!
