Last year’s Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander wasn’t an outright bomb, but it wasn’t quite a hit either. The film underwhelmed stateside with only $58 million off a reported $94 million budget. However, international audiences were far more forgiving as the movie grossed $216 million overseas for a worldwide gross of $274 million. That’s good enough for production company GK Films to consider moving forward with a sequel.

THR reports that they’ve hired writer Amy Jump to pen the next installment of the Tomb Raider franchise. For those unfamiliar with Tomb Raider, the movie is based on the long-running video game series following British adventurer Lara Croft. The last movie left off following the overarching plot of the recent video games where there’s a shadowy organization named Trinity out to acquire particular artifacts that could wreak havoc on mankind.

There are no other details on what they might do with the sequel. Presumably, Vikander would return to play Lara Croft (franchises usually sign their lead actors to multi-film contacts), but everything else seems to be up in the air. Since they’re angling for higher grosses and knowing that the film underperformed stateside I wouldn’t be surprised to see a new director and possibly a different scope. Obviously, you’ve got to keep the tomb raiding aspect, but now that they’ve got the origin story out of the way, it might be interesting to see them embrace the Indiana Jones of it all and just have some more lighthearted fun with it now that Lara knows what happened to her missing father. Or they could stick closer to the games and go with Rise of the Tomb Raider’s move into a wintery landscape.
