Universal is reportedly in negotiations with writer-director Tony Gilroy (Duplicity) to helm the fourth Bourne film, tentatively titled The Bourne Legacy.  Gilroy recently turned in the script that he was hired to write back in June.  Paul Greengrass chose not to return to the series back in December 2009 and franchise star Matt Damon has indicated that he’ll only return if Greengrass comes back.  Deadline reports that Universal will make the film whether Damon returns or not, which makes it sounds like the script has Jason Bourne as the star again rather than a relaunch with a new character.

Since they can’t get Greengrass back, getting Gilroy as a replacement is a solid choice since he’s written all of the Bourne movies and has shown himself as a capable director with Duplicity and Michael ClaytonThe Bourne Legacy was previously slated for a 2012 release but Deadline says that Universal hasn’t locked in a firm timetable just yet.

  1. Honestly, the Greengrass Bournes weren’t as good as the original. I enjoyed the sequels, especially on first viewing, but #2 overdid the cinema vérité to the point that two key action scenes were almost impossible to follow or care about and (spoiler) killing Marie never really paid off like it should have. #3 was spectacularly entertaining the first time I saw it, but it’s much weaker on repeat viewings (just not much of an emotional core at all.) I can watch the first one over and over.

Frankly, I’m happy to see it go into someone else’s hands. Damon’s loyalty is commendable but I hope Greengrass lets him off the hook for the sake of the franchise.
I was so glad Greengrass didn’t make Bourne 4 when I saw what he did with Green Zone: a disappointing propaganda film with action shellac. Almost insulting after the even hand he brought to the amazing United 93.

It’s Doug Liman and the original Tony Gilroy script that created Bourne/DamonSmartActionStar so let’s see if Greengrass can swallow his pride and give Damon his blessing to return without him.

I’d rather see Greengrass make something great again, anyway!

  2. you can’t make this movie without Damon and Greengrass werenot in this movie…
thats just stupid, if Damon wants Greengrass get him Greengrass.
    What the big deal.
you would just waste you money making it without!

  3. Well you know where this crap will go if MD ain’t back as Bourne. DOWN THE CRAPPER!!!
And you can see well into the future how Bourne can eventually become a movie with 9 sequels with Jud Nelson as a Bourne, Shag, my dead mama and Howard the duck taking their turns.
    That’s show biz baby!
