March 31, 2012

Last week presented me with the first opportunity I’ve had in a while to catch two movies in a theater within 24 hours of one another (cue the scoffing of real cinephiles). While I’ll sure that I’ll be hammered for that previous statement when it comes time to renew my movie blogger certification, the truth is that, in the small market I call home, only the most mainstream of the mainstream films ever make it to the silver screen. So, with that said, I’d just like to thank the creative forces behind 21 Jump Street and The Hunger Games for giving me the opportunity to spend 1/6 of a day at the movies with films that, while drastically different in almost every conceivable metric, were solid from beginning to end.

Moving on, in this week’s installment the Top 5 is offering modest coverage of Anchorman 2‘s forward progress, Wrath of the Titans interviews with Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, director Jonathan Liebesman and more, the debut of our new podcast, The Collision, The Dark Knight Rises trailer in Lego form, and a recap of some of the week’s top trailers. Per usual, you can find a brief recap and link to each after the jump.

1. News Team, Assemble…Again! ANCHORMAN 2 Is Happening

There aren’t many sequels that I feel genuinely excited about seeing. Anchorman 2 is an exception to that rule. Anytime Ron Burgundy and Co. feel the need to reassemble, they have my blessing. It goes without saying, then, that I’m downright elated to hear that filming on the sequel is set to begin in February 2013. Once you get yourself acquainted with that news, feel free to wander on over to Matt’s “12 Actors Who Should Be in Anchorman 2 post for a trip down “What If Lane”.

2. WRATH OF THE TITANS Interviews with Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, More

Do you feel the need to take a 100 minute timeout from reality and just enjoy Zeus’ thunderbolt hurdling toward you in 3D? If you answered anything other than “Hell no, 3D thunderbolts give me seizures” then I think Wrath of the Titans could be just what you’re looking for. You can check out Matt’s review of the pic by clicking here, and follow the corresponding links to check out Steve’s video interviews with Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson, director Jonathan Liebesman (there’s another Liebesman interview here too), and Toby Kebbell, and Christina’s interview with Danny Huston.

3. Our Podcast, THE COLLISION, Debuts

Earlier this week, my colleagues Matt, Adam, and Dave unleashed upon the interwebs a new podcast known as The Collision (you can listen to the inaugural episode by clicking here). As much fun as I have reading their takes on movies, television, and things of the like, listening to their takes on movies, television, and things of the like was just as entertaining to me if not more so. All of these niceties in mind, the answer is “yes”, gentlemen. I’ll be happy to appear as a guest on the show.

4. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Trailer in Lego Form

I’ll keep this as straightforward as possible. ParanickFilmz has grafted three loves of mine (Batman, Legos, and stop-motion) into one very cool piece of work. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you The Dark Knight Rises trailer in stop-motion, Lego form. Honestly, the only downside of all of this is that you and I will most likely never do anything remotely this cool with Legos.

Aside from the frustrating teaser of the teaser trailer for Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake, this past week brought us a fair amount of respectable advertising cuts from upcoming films such as The Dictator, American Reunion (red-band, but no nudity…womp.), Jennifer Lawrence’s House at the End of the Street, Hotel Transylvania, DreamWorks’ Rise of the Guardians, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (yes, it’s only a teaser, but Bella’s got red eyes in it and, perhaps most importantly, it’s not a teaser of a teaser).
