Landing just outside of this week’s Top 5 and earning an opening paragraph mention as a result is the first trailer and poster for writer/editor/director Ti West‘s The Sacrament. Obviously inspired by 1978′s Jonestown Massacre, the film features a team of journalists who attempt to document the story of a seemingly peaceful religious commune only to have the proverbial shit hit the fan in the process. I think West is among the best working directors in terms of creating and maintaining terror as evidenced by both 2009′s The House of the Devil and 2011′s The Innkeepers. Each of those films expertly sustain a sense of dread throughout and if Gene Jones hauntingly daring the visiting journalists to “Take it…” in this first trailer is any indication, The Sacrament looks to be cut from the same stellar mold. While it will be tough to match the psychological horror dealt out by 2011′s cult-centric drama Martha Marcy May Marlene, I’ll be anxiously anticipating West’s latest up until the time it hits VOD on May 1st.

Transitioning to the list section of the feature, this week’s installment highlights the first trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Steve’s set visit coverage for X-Men: Days of Future Past, interviews for and Matt’s review of Paul W.S. Anderson‘s Pompeii, casting news for Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot, and coverage from the floor of Toy Fair 2014 at the Javits Center in NYC. Keep reading for a quick recap and link to each of the above.

1. First Trailer for Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

It looks like Marvel has another huge hit on their hands. The first trailer for their intergalactic adventure Guardians of the Galaxy debuted this week and it looks spectacular. Chris Pratt is a stud, Rocket Raccoon seems all but guaranteed to be a fan favorite, and the humor provided by John C. Reilly and Peter Serafinowicz is spot-on. Is it August 1st yet? No? Okay, fine. For now, keep enjoying the trailer and click here for the barrage of GOTG content we churned out this past week alongside it.

2. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Set Visit

While I would have loved to have seen director Matthew Vaughn stick around to follow-up his excellent X-Men: First Class, I have to keep reminding myself that Bryan Singer was at the helm of a couple pretty great X-Men movies himself (especially X2). That in mind, I’m very much looking forward to Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past and Steve’s set visit coverage is a perfect way to indulge my anticipation until May 23rd. Check out his set visit report including 90 things to know about the film and on-set interviews with James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman, Bryan Singer, writer/producer Simon Kinberg, and producer Lauren Shuler Donner.

3. POMPEII Interviews and Review

Even though director Paul W.S. Anderson’s general approach of over-the-top action and all out destruction isn’t my cup of tea (unless you’re 1995′s Mortal Kombat, in which case my nostalgia rises above any and all criticism), there has to be a considerable market for a film that’s positioned as Gladiator meets Titanic set against the backdrop of certain volcanic annihilation, right? So far, Pompeii‘s box office numbers say “wrong” and Matt’s review of the film may provide some insight as to why. Irrespective of all of this, there are those who will watch and enjoy Pompeii and as a result I offer you Steve’s video interviews with stars Kit Harington, Emily Browning, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

4. Fox’s FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot Casts Its Four

It’s going to take a hell of a reboot to wash the taste of Fox’s first two cracks at The Fantastic Four out of my mouth. Although I’m not yet convinced that director Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four is going to be capable of such a feat, I will admit that on paper the team’s roster looks solid with Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell all in the fold. With that cast in mind and the promise that I’ll never again have to listen to Laurence Fishburne provide the voice for Silver Surfer in his sleep, the least I can do is give this latest iteration a fair shot.

5. Toy Fair 2014 Coverage

If you’re a toy collector who follows the happenings of Toy Fair each year but doesn’t have the opportunity to attend in person by virtue of not being associated with a trade then get in here. Perri Nemiroff has done you a solid by taking a substantial number of pics from the convention floor of the largest toy and youth product show this side of the Prime Meridian.
