In last week's opening paragraph I welcomed the summer movie season into the fold by way of The Avengers. Earlier this week it dawned on me that another season is upon us as well. One that is nearly as costly as a summer blockbuster, albeit far less anticipated by yours truly: wedding season. Over the course of the next few months, I'll attend no fewer than four ceremonies/receptions (not including my own) and, while I'll be honored to have been invited to share a special moment with friends new and old, I'll likely fall behind on my summer movie checklist. So, if you start noticing Top 5 opening paragraphs having less to do with film than what type of dessert was served at the reception, you have my most sincere advance apology.Wedding disclaimers aside, awaiting you on the other side of this week's Top 5 is James Cameron saying he only wants to make Avatar movies from now on, the first trailer for director Ruben Fleischer's Gangster Squad, Prometheus' R-rating, Matt's letter of recommendation for Joss Whedon, and Dark Shadows coverage including interviews with Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, and Seth Grahame-Smith. A brief recap and link to each ensues after the jump.1. James Cameron Says He Only Wants to Make AVATAR MoviesI've got good news and I've got bad news. The good news is that James Cameron says he doesn't want to "produce other people's movies for them" anymore. So, those worried about the incredibly influential director strong-arming a Sanctum sequel into production may finally be able to rest easy. The bad news is that the talent that has delivered some of my favorites in Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgement Day says that he is now solely "...in the Avatar business". More on Cameron's future plans, including several Avatar sequels can be found by clicking here.2. First Trailer for GANGSTER SQUADgangster-squad-poster-sliceThe first trailer for director Ruben Fleischer's 1940s L.A. crime pic, Gangster Squad, hit the interwebs this week and, in doing so, made my Wednesday, May 9th just a little bit better. Upon hearing about Fleischer's involvement in the film, I was interested to see how his visual style and knack for finding humor in otherwise crappy situations (see Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less for examples) might translate. After watching this trailer I think the answer is that it translates well. Really well.3. PROMETHEUS Is Rated Rprometheus-movie-image-green-rapace-fassbender-sliceWhen a pre-sale ticket stub for Ridley Scott's Prometheus referenced an R-rating for the pic, we ran a story and the comments section exploded with paraphrased sentiments like "ticket stubs don't mean anything, you suck at your job!!". We then updated the story with confirmation from 20th Century Fox that the film would indeed be rated R for "sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language" and the comments section tide shifted somewhat toward the "who cares what a movie is rated!!" frame of mind. Oh, Internet comment sections. You really are a reliably cheap form of entertainment.4. Editorial: Marvel Needs to Re-Hire Joss Whedon for THE AVENGERS 2joss-whedon-samuel-l-jackson-the-avengers-sliceIf the whole filmmaker/television series creator/comic book writer thing doesn't work out for Joss Whedon he should rest assured knowing that he can list our own Matt Goldberg as a professional reference during the job search. In his latest editorial, Matt doesn't just give a concise recap of Marvel Studios' tendency to make their directorial relationships of the one-and-done variety, he also fully endorses the idea of bringing Whedon's talent back to the Avengers universe not as a reward, but as a recognition of his talent.5. DARK SHADOWS Interviews with Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, and Seth Grahame-Smithdark-shadows-johnny-depp-sliceDark Shadows, the latest Tim Burton/Johnny Depp experiment in gothstream (gothic + mainstream = gothstream) hit theaters this weekend and, as a direct result, we peppered the site with a dash of coverage including: a press day interview with both Burton and Depp, a video interview with screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith (in which he discusses the Beetlejuice sequel), and Matt's review of the pic. Burton/Depp fans, I trust you know what to do.
