I hate to wish my life away, but with both The World’s End and You’re Next hitting theaters I really can’t help but look ahead to next weekend. That’s to say nothing of the pics opening this week (I plan on checking out Kick-Ass 2 next Wednesday), rather that the aforementioned two are a pair of my most anticipated of the soon-to-end summer movie season. In fact, You’re Next has been on my must-see list since Matt reviewed it at TIFF 2011 nearly two full years ago. In addition to the excitement associated with finally seeing the movie, my latent resentment of Goldberg for having seen it a lifetime ago will finally come to a close which is nice because I could use the sleep.
But enough about next weekend. Let’s focus on the here and now. This week’s Top 5 includes a slew of Kick-Ass 2 interviews, rare footage from Jerry Lewis‘s unreleased film The Day the Clown Cried, Vin Diesel all but confirming that he’s voicing Groot in Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, Paranoia interviews with Harrison Ford and more, and a recap of our coverage from Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim. As you might expect, a brief recap and link to each of the above can be found after the jump.
1. KICK-ASS 2 Interviews with Chloe Grace Moretz and More
I found Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass to be a refreshing take on the superhero genre we’ve grown so familiar with. Did the ultra-violence dished out by then pre-teen Chloe Grace Moretz make me a little uncomfortable? Sure. Nevertheless, it’s a part of my personal movie collection and something I see myself revisiting down the road. For that reason, and the inclusion of Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes, I’m going to spend money at the box office to check out Kick-Ass 2 in spite of the less than stellar reactions I’ve read thus far (Matt’s review here). If you’re like me and willing to give the sequel the benefit of the doubt, then do your homework and check out these video interviews with stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and the aforementioned Chloe Grace Moretz.
2. Rare Footage from Jerry Lewis’ Unreleased THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED
If you find yourself suffering from superhero movie rumor fatigue, this entry may be to your liking (also, go ahead and skip this week’s 3rd spot). This past week, extremely rare behind the scenes footage of Jerry Lewis’ unreleased The Day the Clown Cried hit the Interwebs courtesy of a Dutch TV special. If you’re like me and know little to nothing of the film, the short of it is that Lewis plays a failed clown who is forced to entertain children during the Holocaust and, to this day, Lewis has made it somewhat of a life goal to ensure that the general public never sees it. Yeah, I definitely see myself scouring the Internet for hours searching for every recollection and theory regarding The Day the Clown Cried now…
3. Vin Diesel Strongly Hints He’s Voicing Groot in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
…And we’re back to superhero movie rumors! During San Diego Comic-Con, Vin Diesel teased a Marvel movie announcement in the coming weeks. This past week, he took things a step further by changing his Facebook cover photo to Guardians of the Galaxy character Groot – a walking, talking tree – that it appears he may be voicing for the upcoming James Gunn movie (many thanks to our friends at Badass Digest for checking Vin Diesel’s Facebook page, leaving us all one fewer thing to clear from our browsing histories). To drive the point home even further, save for an official announcement from Marvel, Diesel also discussed voicing Groot with Hero Complex.
4. PARANOIA Interviews with Harrison Ford and More
Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly care about the thriller Paranoia, opening this weekend, Steve does a video interview with Harrison Ford for the film and gets the actor to discuss the pitfalls of social media and how “clearly insane” director Adam McKay is. Whether or not I pay to see the film in theaters is one thing. But watching this entertaining interview costs $0 and is totally worth the four minutes. Also, in the event that you are interested in learning more about the film, we also have video interviews with the lovely Amber Heard and Liam Hemsworth, and a text interview with Ford, Hemsworth, Heard, Lucas Till, and director Robert Luketic.
5. All of Our D23 Expo Coverage
Last weekend Disney’s D23 Expo took over the Anaheim Convention Center and brought with it a plethora of announcements, interviews, etc. regarding the studio’s upcoming slate. While you can click here for all of our coverage from this year’s convention, I might also point out some of my personal favorite video interviews including this one with Kristen Bell who briefly discusses the Veronica Mars movie and this one with Tom Hiddleston where he talks about his rare Olly Moss Thor posters.
