TOP 5: MAN OF STEEL, First Trailer and Poster for THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, THIS IS THE END, New ELYSIUM Trailer, E3 2013 Recap

Was there really a chance of writing about something other than Man of Steel in this week’s opening paragraph? Well, maybe. I did really enjoy This Is the End. But, alas, this week is about Supes’ return to the big screen. I watched the film (in 2D) for the first time last night and, as far as superhero movies go, it elicited an emotional response from me that few in the genre have. Sure, there were times where the grand scale of destruction left me cold and the product placement took me out of the moment (if only to admire some beautiful appliances meeting their untimely demise). Nevertheless, the themes of love, sacrifice, acceptance, and trust were beautifully woven into the film’s text in such a way that it made me do something I’ve only done one other time (while reading Grant Morrison‘s excellent All-Star Superman run): become emotionally invested in the Man of Steel.

While this is undoubtedly Kal-El’s weekend, in addition to Man of Steel interviews and more, this week’s Top 5 also includes the first teaser trailer and poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, This Is the End interviews with Seth Rogen and more, the new Elysium trailer, and a recap of E3 2013 from the convention floor. Learn more about all of the above via a link and brief recap after the jump.

1. MAN OF STEEL Review and Interviews with Henry Cavill and More

As you may have noticed already, there are a ton of Man of Steel assets on the site this week. In the hopes of saving you time, you can click here for all of our coverage or you can go directly to some of my favorites such as Matt’s review, Steve’s video interview with Zack Snyder, our “Man of Steel: What Did You Think?” post, Christina’s text interview with Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon & Russell Crowe, and this beautiful timed release Man of Steel poster from Mondo and artist Martin Ansin (which you still have time to pick up if you haven’t already).

2. First Poster and Teaser Trailer for THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

In addition to a ton of MoS coverage, this past week also brought us the first poster and first teaser trailer for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I don’t have any statistical evidence to support this claim, but based on the two points above I’m going to go ahead and coin this the best week since McDonalds last reintroduced the McRib.

3. THIS IS THE END Review and Interview with Seth Rogen and More

In anticipation of seeing This Is the End together, a few buddies and I recounted the movies we saw in theater that made us laugh the most. Some of my answers included: Team America: World Police, Dodgeball, and 21 Jump Street. After checking out This Is the End on Wednesday, I now have another film that easily makes the cut. If you’ve yet to watch it, and aren’t easily offended by Apocalypse humor, then do yourself a favor and buy a ticket as soon as possible. My endorsement aside, click here for Matt’s review of the film and Dave’s video interview with Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, and the great Craig Robinson.

4. New Trailer for ELYSIUM

The more I see of Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 follow-up, Elysium, the more confident I become that I’m going to really dig the film. Sci-fi that is smart, entertaining, imaginative, and socially conscious all at once is exactly what I want out of the genre (that’s not asking for much, right?). Too often we get a lot of style and very little substance; a grandiose set piece that is supposed to supplant an underdeveloped or absent idea. I don’t think we’re going to have that problem with Elysium. Check out this latest trailer and see if you agree.

5. E3 2013 Recap: Xbox One and Playstation 4 Pre-Orders Go Live

For those of us unable to attend E3 2013, our Jeff Morreale did an excellent job in his convention recap of simultaneously letting us know what we missed and trying to help ease the pain of missing it with over 100 images from the convention floor. Moreover, in case you’ve been without contact to the outside world for the past few days, you should also know that both Microsoft and Sony are now accepting pre-orders for their respective next-gen consoles: the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. Decide which console is best for you and reevaluate your student loan repayment plans accordingly.
