Happy 2015, everyone. Here's to hoping you and yours enjoyed a safe and happy holiday. With all of the madness that comes with end of year festivities behind us, it's time to get back in the swing of things, starting with a recommendation. Available now on Netflix Instant is the great romantic dramedy The One I Love. Starring Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss almost exclusively, the film debuted at Sundance last year and is an impressively sure-handed feature debut from director Charlie McDowell and screenwriter Justin Lader. Duplass and Moss are excellent as a married couple who embark on a weekend getaway with the hopes of saving their marriage only to find something truly jarring at their destination. I think the less you know about this one going in the better (this trailer actually does a good job of teasing without spoiling), but I'm not giving too much away by saying that I think fans of The Twilight Zone will approve. Lader's conceit would fit in nicely with Rod Serling's world even if it lacks a definitive lesson for its protagonists.

Recommendations aside, this year's first Top 5 installment features interviews for and Matt's review of Selma, a look at ten musicals that may appeal to those of us who hate musicals, interviews for and Matt's review of Tim Burton's Big Eyes, an excellent trailer for the horror film It Follows, and a look at some of the staff's "Best of 2014" lists. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

1. SELMA Interviews and Review

Though technically a 2014 release, Selma is one of my most anticipated of 2015 with its full theatrical release beginning next weekend. While its certainly tailor-made for awards season recognition, the film undeniably looks to be a powerful tribute to a movement that, as Matt points out in his review, is still far from seeing its goal fully realized. For more on the pic, check out Christina's text interviews with David Oyelowo & director Ava DuVernay, Common, Lorraine Toussaint, Ava DuVernay on her own, and Perri's video interview with both David Oyelowo & Ava DuVernay.

2. 10 Musicals for People Who Hate Musicals

Even as film lovers, we all have certain genres that we enjoy and others that we tend to avoid. That said, I'm a firm believer that one's general dislike of a specific genre shouldn't prevent them from loving a gem that might happen to belong to said genre. Combine this belief with my own casual hatred of musicals and you can probably deduce why I'm including Rob's breakdown of "10 Musicals for People Who Hate Musicals" in this week's installment.

 3. BIG EYES Interviews and Review

He's spent so much time making fantastical nonsense with Johnny Depp of late that I tend to forget that the gifted Tim Burton made one of my favorite films in Big Fish. I've yet to see Big Eyes so I can't attest to its merits or lack thereof, but regardless it feels good to see Burton make something other than the latest Depp movie that I couldn't care less about. If this simple fact also has you interested in Big Eyes then by all means check out Matt's review, Perri's video interviews with Tim Burton, Christoph Waltz, Danny Huston, and Krysten Ritter & Jason Schwartzman, and Christina's phone interview with writers Scott Alexander & Larry Kraszewski.

4. IT FOLLOWS Trailer

One film that I heard raves about while at MondoCon in Austin, TX last year was writer/director David Robert Mitchell's It Follows which was playing just down the road at Fantastic Fest at the time. Unfortunately I wasn't able to catch it then but, after seeing this exceptional trailer, you can bet I'll be throwing down money to see it as soon as it's released this year. Making STD's seem scarier than they already are is no easy feat but Mitchell seems to have somehow accomplished it.

5. Staff Best of 2014 Lists

top-10-films-of-2014

As unimportant as they may be in the grand scheme of things, I love reading "Top 10" or "Best of..." lists at years end. It's a great way not to see how everyone agrees/disagrees with me, but to discover great films I may have missed throughout the year. If you have any interest in doing the same then I invite you to compare/contrast top ten lists from across our staff including Matt's favorite films of 2014, Adam's favorites, Perri's favorites, Haleigh's favorites, and even a "Top 10" list from yours truly.
