I love this time of year. The opening week of college football is upon us and we’re in the middle of a three-day Labor Day weekend. To make matters even more enticing, the 100 degree heat of the Midwest is slowly but surely becoming a distant memory. All in all, life is good. Now, for those of you who look forward to our weekly “Top 5″ installment, things are only getting better.

In this week’s edition, we’re bringing you our coverage of Star Wars: The Complete Saga (blinking Ewoks and all), a new batch of set photos from Man of Steel and The Avengers, Don Cheadle’s hilarious albeit disturbing take on Captain Planet, and an exclusive interview with 50/50 director Jonathan Levine. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

1. STAR WARS: THE COMPLETE SAGA Coverage

With the release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga imminently approaching, excitement amongst many fans of the franchise has built to a considerable level. Heck, we even threw our own little nostalgia party with this Star Wars retrospective piece. All anticipation aside, though, the collection isn’t without its detractors who are wondering how many times they are going to be asked to buy the same movies. Well, almost the same movies. There are a few alterations such as Darth Vader’s “Noooo!!!” and blinking ewoks. Sigh.

2. New MAN OF STEEL Set Photos

I’ll admit that I have high hopes for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. I think Snyder has an eye for cinematic spectacle and Kal-El certainly presents plenty of opportunities to explore that angle. Of course, only time will tell how the final Man of Steel product comes together. In the meantime, all we can do is look at new set photos showcasing Superman’s costume and debate/speculate from there.

3. New Promo Art and Set Photos from THE AVENGERS

When I first heard of Marvel’s plans for an Avengers film, I remember questioning whether or not they could pull it off. After all, introducing each of the characters in their own individual piece for the overarching purpose of eventually putting them all together seemed ambitious to say the least. Now, the more I see of the characters, their individual films, and the way they seem to be interacting as a cohesive unit in The Avengers, the more excited I get about May 2012. I hope you’ll check out some new promo art from the film, this “sneak peek” from the upcoming Thor Blu-ray, and these set photos showing off the entire cast and join me in my anticipation.

4. Don Cheadle Is CAPTAIN PLANET

Growing up, I remember watching Captain Planet and the Planeteers and thinking to myself, “This theme song rules” and “Captain Planet is kind of a lame superhero but there really isn’t anything else on right now so he’ll have to do.” Little did elementary school me understand the pure evil that lie beneath the Captain’s icy blue exterior. Luckily, I now have the great Don Cheadle to interpret that evil and present it in live-action form so convincingly that my dreams will be haunted for months/years to come.

5. Director Jonathan Levine Exclusive Interview 50/50

One of my most anticipated films of this year is director Jonathan Levine’s dramedy 50/50. Everything I’ve seen from the movie makes it look like a perfect blend of genuinely touching and undeniably funny. As cliché as it is to say, it seems to encapsulate those moments in our lives where we have to laugh to keep from crying. If you’re looking forward to the film as much as I am or just want to learn a little bit more about it, be sure to click here for Steve’s exclusive interview with Levine.
