I’m writing you this afternoon less than an hour removed from my first trip to the little slice of Americana that is a Bass Pro Shop. For those unfamiliar with the chain, imagine a store with Wal-Mart-esque square footage that devotes itself entirely to all things outdoor. While I’ll admit to being a little out of my element (okay, way out of my element), even an outdoor novice like myself can relish the opportunity to have their picture taken with a taxidermic grizzly bear. For those of you waiting for me to somehow make a connection between my Bass Pro experience and this week’s “Top 5″, this ellipsis is about as close as you’re going to get…

…In this week’s installment you’ll find the much-anticipated first trailer from writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, the first poster for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D, some new set photos from Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises, and interviews for both The Thing and Craig Brewer’s Footloose. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

1. First Trailer for THE AVENGERS

I typically try and use the brief recaps in the “Top 5″ as a way of selling the article in question. In this case, I’m not sure it’s necessary. The first trailer for Marvel’s The Avengers debuted earlier this week. You probably don’t me to convince you to click here and watch it again and again.

2. First Poster for STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D

I’ll admit to not being the biggest Star Wars fan around. As such, I can’t say that I really care about Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace hitting the big screen in 3D. However, I have to thank Matt for astutely pointing out that this first poster for the re-release features Yoda staring longingly at Darth Maul’s Dark Back Side. Now, if only Jar Jar Binks were somewhere to be found on the sheet, I may never stop laughing at its ridiculousness.

3. New Set Photos from MAN OF STEEL and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

What’s this? Two movies in one “Top 5″ segment? That’s right, I’m cheating. New set photos from two of the comic book movie world’s most anticipated releases hit this week and they see Man of Steel‘s Henry Cavill and Gary Oldman of The Dark Knight Rises vying for my coveted “Best Facial Hair of the Week” award. Okay, maybe that’s not a real award but, then again, maybe it is. Who’s to say? Regardless, I’m giving Oldman the slight edge simply because a mustache like that is classy and hard to come by. Better luck next time, Kal-El.

4. THE THING Interviews with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, director Matthijs van Heijningen and More

Are you even remotely interested in the prequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing that hit theaters this weekend? If you answered with anything other than “Hell no!” or “Wait, who’s John Carpenter?” then I I believe you may be a perfect candidate to check out our video interviews with the cast and director of the film. Click here for our own Tommy Cook’s sit-down with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Eric Christian Olsen, click here for co-star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (who also discusses Walter Hill’s Bullet to the End), and click here for director Matthijs van Heijningen.

5. FOOTLOOSE Interviews with Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough and Director Craig Brewer

Admit it: you thought director/co-writer Craig Brewer’s Footloose remake was a bad idea from the word “Go.” Well, a funny thing happened on the way to small Midwestern town dance hall. While some may never be able to be convinced otherwise, all signs points towards the pic being entertaining and well-made from beginning to end. Whether you’re one of the few who believed in it all along or you’re willing to check your pride at the door and admit you may have spoke too soon, our interviews with Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, and the aforementioned Craig Brewer are waiting with open arms.

Hey, Now I Would Just State My Claim, “Star Wars” has about a “40 Year” Track Record… That being said, “Something Gone Horribilly Wrong” Would Ruin This Film.
