This weekend’s release of ParaNorman will afford me the rare opportunity to share an afternoon in the theater with two of my nephews, ages 8 and 10. Granted, they’re a little disappointed that we’re not checking it out in 3D, but I just can’t bring myself to foster any sort of affinity for the technology in their young and impressionable minds. The last movie we watched in theaters together was 2009′s Up and it was an experience that I’ll never forget as its brilliant opening sequence brought tears to both of their eyes at the ripe ages of 5 and 7. It was a glowing example of the cinema’s ability to touch young and old alike and while ParaNorman will likely be unable to touch that moment, I’m looking forward to it a ton nonetheless.

My weekend plans aside, in a three-fifths ode to our action heroes of yesteryear, this week’s Top 5 includes video interviews with the cast of The Expendables 2, video interviews with the cast and directors of ParaNorman, the first poster and trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s The Last Stand, David Cronenberg vs. the superhero genre, and the first trailer for Sly Stallone and director Walter Hill‘s revenge tale, Bullet to the Head. As always, a brief recap and link to each greets you after the jump.

1. THE EXPENDABLES 2 Interviews with Jason Statham and More

With The Expendables 2 earning $10.5 million at the box office on opening night, it’s pretty clear that audiences aren’t yet suffering from action hero fatigue. While my weekend cinema plans are already booked, I’ll go ahead and count myself among those who just won’t be able to help but buy a ticket to check out the sequel on the big screen at some point. If you’re among this sizable demographic, I recommend checking out Steve’s video interviews with stars Jason Statham, the sharply attired Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, and Randy Couture.

2. PARANORMAN Interviews with Anna Kendrick and More

Combining beautiful stop-motion technology with a paranormal tale fit for both children and adults, ParaNorman looks to be tailor-made for a Sunday matinee viewing with the family. While today’s opening paragraph describes my own excitement for the pic, Matt’s appreciation can be found in his review and Steve declares his love for the film in his video interviews with Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Leslie Mann, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and directors Sam Fell and Chris Butler. 3. First Poster and Trailer for THE LAST STAND

At 65 years young, the former Governator of California is returning to his leading role roots in director Kim Jee-Woon’s actioner The Last Stand. While we were able to bring you the first image from the film earlier this month, this week gave us the first poster and first trailer for the film which features Schwarzenegger as a sheriff who attempts to defy Father Time and protect the border of his town from a fleeing drug cartel leader in spite of having an AARP card and the world’s most annoying sidekick in Johnny Knoxville.

4. David Cronenberg Doesn’t Like Superhero Movies

That David Cronenberg doesn’t share cinematic tastes with much of society doesn’t really come as a shock to me. Nevertheless, when the Baron of Blood said in an interview for his new film Cosmopolis (check out Matt’s review here) that a “…superhero movie, by definition, it’s comic book. It’s for kids.” a flurry of debate broke out in our comments section. Click here to check out the original article and join the debate. Let us also not forget that Cronenberg’s excellent A History of Violence, although not a superhero tale, was adapted from John Wagner and Vince Locke’s graphic novel (i.e. comic book) of the same name.

5. First Trailer for Sylvester Stallone’s BULLET TO THE HEAD

Bullet-to-the-Head-Sylvester-Stallone-sliceConcluding this week’s three-fifths ode to old guys doing their best to continue beating people up like they used to is the first trailer for Sly Stallone and director Walter Hill’s Bullet to the Head. Even if you have no interest in seeing the full film, I encourage you to check out this cut if for no other reason than to watch Stallone and Jason Momoa engage in an all too rare axe battle.
