August 10, 2013

Last night I had the chance to check out We’re the Millers with a group of friends and while I wouldn’t classify it as a “Must See!”, it’s a plenty serviceable R-rated comedy. As you can probably tell from the trailers, English actor Will Poulter delivers some of the biggest laughs and, for my money, it’s hard to go wrong with Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn in most anything. Aside from its tendency to settle for just being “OK”, my only real gripe would be that the film’s premise exceeds its execution. On paper, it has the potential to be a hilarious, yet incisive, play on the nuclear family. On screen, it turns the convention on its head before ultimately forcing its characters to conform to many of its tenets.

Although I’m sure you can never get enough of my one paragraph film reactions, we must move on to this week’s Top 5. Included this week is the new trailer for Thor: The Dark World, Elysium interviews with Neill Blomkamp and more, the new Doctor Who, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters interviews, and a slew of We’re the Millers interviews with the cast and director Rawson Marshall Thurber. Per routine, a brief recap and link to each of the above kindly requests your attention after the jump.

1. New Trailer for THOR: THE DARK WORLD

2011’s Thor is my favorite Marvel movie outside of The Avengers so it’s probably no surprise that, in spite of the fact that I have no clue what’s really going on in it, I still like the new trailer for Thor: The Dark World a lot. There’s Natalie Portman, Loki, Thor smashing things, a thrilling score with bombastic drums, more Natalie Portman. In short, pretty much every thing I could ask for. Also, while we’re on the topic, feel free to peruse Steve’s video interview with Tom Hiddleston yesterday at Disney’s D23 expo in Anaheim as well as his set visit interview with Chris Hemsworth.

2. ELYSIUM Interviews with Matt Damon and More

As much as I try and stop myself from doing this very thing, I have to admit that I’m guilty of letting Elysium‘s lukewarm critical reception (Matt’s review here) stunt my excitement for the film. While I still plan on seeing it in theaters, I’ll likely be doing so with more reservation and less childlike excitement which isn’t at all what I had intended. Whether you’re anticipation is unwavering or my situation sounds familiar, I encourage you to check out Steve’s video interviews with Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley and print interview with director Neill Blomkamp.

3. Peter Capaldi Is the New DOCTOR WHO

For those of you who count the BBC’s Doctor Who amongst your favorites (my previous Comic-Con exploits tell me there are plenty of you out there), the introduction of Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor was likely the biggest thing this past week had going for it. I’ll save myself the embarrassment of trying to sound like I know a lot about the series and say only this: the idea of an ongoing series whose main character can (and is meant to) be played by different actors is ingenious and no doubt a major reason why the show remains relevant nearly a half century after its debut.

The fact that the sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (Matt’s review here), got made in the first place tells me that there are likely plenty of devoted Percy Jackson fans out there. For those of you who fall under this category, I doubt I have to sell you on these interviews. For those like me who know little to nothing about the series, I would recommend checking out Steve’s video interviews where the lovely Alexandra Daddario talks about the idea of playing Wonder Woman and Logan Lerman discusses the unlikely reboot of The Butterfly Effect and how he can’t believe his parents let him act in the original.

5. WE’RE THE MILLERS Interviews with Nick Offerman and More

Similar to how studios know that trailers for trailers is an awesome and completely not annoying trend, I know you’re all dying to read a summary of my opening paragraph summary of We’re the Millers (Matt’s review here). Here it goes: the movie is a pretty good time, Will Poulter, Kathryn Hahn, and Nick Offerman are funny, I think it could have been better. If you’re mind isn’t too blown by the summary of a summary then I encourage you to check out Steve’s video interview with director Rawson Marshall Thurber, phone interview with Nick Offerman, and press conference recap with Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, Will Poulter, Kathryn Hahn, and Thurber.
