Last week, I admitted to being among those who become hopelessly caught up in the Olympic Summer Games. One week later and things have taken an unexpected turn for the pathetic as I now find myself legitimately concerned with the “Medal Count”. As if it has any sort of bearing on my own life in any way, shape, and/or form, I’m consistently pulling for the U.S. to overtake China not only in total medals, but also in total Gold medals. In short, whether by virtue of patriotism or just sheer boredom, living vicariously through world-class athletes is what my life has come to.
Sports talk aside, awaiting you on the other end of this week’s Top 5 are brief recaps and links to Steve’s Total Recall video interviews with Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and more, the first full trailer for James Bond’s Skyfall, our multi-part interview with the great Guillermo del Toro, the news that The Hobbit will be a trilogy, and all of our Saturn Awards interviews including talks with writer/director Drew Goddard and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan.
1. TOTAL RECALL Interviews with Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and More
With director Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake hitting theaters this weekend, we were able to bring you a slew of video interviews Steve conducted with stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, and Bryan Cranston. We can argue all day long about the necessity of the pic and how it stacks up to Paul Verhoeven’s original adaptation of the Philip K. Dick story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale”. One thing that is not up for debate, though, is how lucky Steve is to have kicked it with Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel in the same day.
2. First Full Trailer for James Bond’s SKYFALL
As I said when the teaser trailer was released back in May, the James Bond on display in Sam Mendes’ Skyfall looks to be an impressive blend not only of looks, wit, intelligence, and sophistication, but also of badass physical prowess and utter vengeance. I can’t speak for the 007 faithful, but for someone with admittedly limited Bond knowledge, this first full trailer has me really looking forward to the agent’s 23rd cinematic installment.
3. Multi-Part Interview with the One and Only Guillermo del Toro
Not only for you, the reader, but for the interviewer his/herself, all interviews are not created equal. There are some that you look forward to due to your interest in the topic at hand or the interviewee’s background, there are others that feel more like a “job” given your lack of interest in either, and then there are interviews with Guillermo del Toro. The man just oozes charisma and creativity to the point that it’s a pleasure just to sit back and let him talk. That in mind, I really can’t recommend enough that you take the time to check out Steve’s hour-long video interview with del Toro that he has broken up into several parts to be released every day of this week. Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V have hit the site already with more still yet come.
4. THE HOBBIT Will Be a Trilogy
This week the Internet taught us that director Peter Jackson’s two-part adaptation of The Hobbit is now a trilogy. Citing it as an opportunity to “tell more of the tale” Jackson and co. will look to create a cohesion with his beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy by generating a third film via material from Tolkien’s notes and the appendices in The Lord of the Rings. Yet another trip to Middle-earth with Jackson at the helm can’t be a bad thing, can it? Tentatively, it looks as if Summer 2014 will tell.
5. Saturn Awards Interviews with Drew Goddard, Vince Gilligan, and Much More
This year, for the 38th time, The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films bestowed upon the most deserving in the genre The Saturn Award. At this year’s ceremony, Steve was able to catch up with some of the night’s biggest attendees including Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, The Cabin in the Woods‘ Drew Goddard, Fringe showrunner J.H. Wyman, producer Dean Devlin (Independence Day), and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman just to name a few. While these are some of the highlights for me, you might find something else that tickles your fancy even more by clicking here for all of our interviews from the 38th Annual Saturn Awards.
