First Trailer for TOTAL RECALL Starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and Jessica Biel

     April 1, 2012

As promised, the first trailer for the Total Recall remake premiered this afternoon during the Celtics-Heat game and promptly found its way online.  The clip gets across the basic premise.  Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell) turns to benevolent company Rekall to turn his dreams of being a super spy into real memories: “But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man.”  The real emphasis is on the action, and until seeing this trailer, I didn’t understand just how big a blockbuster Total Recall wants to be.  As a devoted fan of trippy sci-fi, here’s hoping director Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) pulled it off.

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy, and a platinum blonde John Cho also star.  Total Recall opens on August 3.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

Official synopsis:

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick.  Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories.  For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

looks alright. far more serious than the original, can’t tell if that’s a good or bad thing yet though

  • Travman93

    Doesn’t look too bad, actually.

  • mee

woah. count me in. i wana see it so baddddd.

  • james

Awesome. Looks like they aimed to make a badass sci-fi action flick, and it seems they succeeded. I’m in.

  • Duh!

It’s April Fools guys. Total Recall came out years ago.

  • Bill

But does it have a prostitute with 3 titties?

    • Migzter13

Not bad I guess. But I won’t put it on top of the original flick regardless if it blows or would prove to be awesome in the end.
Having Arnold on that movie alone already makes that movie a classic.

  • robert barry

Kate Beckinsale is super sexy! I’d let her kick my ass any day of the week…movie looks pretty badass though and Bryan Cranston FTW!!!

  • TJ

Why remake? The Arnie classic will be difficult to top.

  • Rick Ross

Inception, The Bourne Identity, and The Fifth Element all rolled into one

  • Guns Of Navarone

In my opinion, this looks terrible. It’s all eye candy. The visual FX are impressive but throughout all the scenes of the trailer, there wasn’t a single one with any sort of emotion. Horrible, just horrible. Nice one Len.

  • Wockerdaw

Looks cool, hopefully doesn’t take itself as seriously as the trailer does, especially seen as the original was very satirical.

Who knows how much fun it’ll be when we already know the story though…

  • Phil Beta

I know Verhoeven has a far more twisted mind than many directors nowadays, but I’ll keep his version with Arnie as the best. Wiseman is almost as flickery as Michael Bay, only not as successful.

The action sequence is reminiscent of Luc Besson movies, but not nearly as good. Seriously, remakes have become a critical cliché and is killing Hollywood (sorry for moving off topic in the last sentence).

  • Evan

I don’t think the original Total Recall is great, but I liked the 30 second teaser a few days ago for the remake. Saw the full trailer today and was not amused. There is little divergence, it looks like a complete remake. Pass.

  • Dogg

Too bad we ALREADY KNOW THE ENDING. All that sci fi goodness WASTED.

  • Ur mom

Looks interesting, but I rather see THE BOURNE LEGACY.

    • Farzan

I agree, The Bourne Legacy looks a lot better. As for the total recall trailer… was horrible. Not a single scene that looked convincing and don’t get me started on the poor performance from the cast.

  • Jan Sulu

I like all three main stars, Beckinsale should be fun playing a villain, a huge fan of Cranston. John Cho is a fun actor to watch outside that HAROLD & KUMAR gig (here sadly playing another Asian Triad type, sigh). BUt this is way too similar to the “Man On the Run/Wrongfully Accused” type of plot that BOURNE LEGACY, another August release, probably do better.

  • Jazzy Jace

Saving the best for last, a certain Bryan Cranston? Oh well, trailer 2 will be out in June hopefully. Still, this does look awesome.

  • defiant

I’d like to see it, but “I’ve got 5 kids to feed!”

  • Slice

Looks like Underworld 2032. Skipping this one until it shows up on Netflix.

“See you at the party Richter!”

  • Spock Jenkins

The last bit of the trailer where Colin Farrell’s holo-mask head flickers
into different people is the new version of the “Two Weeks” scene??!

  • Nomis1700

It’s NICE!!! Like Borat would say.

    • Will

      Dude he totally would!

  • LEM

I thought I would hate it but that looks really good.

  • Rockslide

That looks really cool. Even if you aren’t impressed with the trailer, you have to admit that the art design on those soldiers and cops and such is pretty amazing.

    • broski

Meh…they look completely ripped off from the Cerberus troops/robots in Mass Effect 2 and 3.

  • Tarek

Looks really good. The Design set is awesome. I love the music. It is so…Terminator. Even if I don’t like that much Colin Farell, I will watch it. I can’t resist to a Sci-Fi movie.

  • Aaron

I’m not sure about this. It seems like they’re going to stick to the original Philip K Dick story, but the original story had hints of quirkiness and humor, along with mystery and sci-fi. This one seems to be all shoot em up with sci fi FX. We’ll see though, after all its just the trailer.

  • Pancakes

    Where’s Quatto?

  • Lance

This is looking good! Can’t believe people are looking for something to complain about – the original movie is no masterpiece of cinema, unlike say, Robocop, another Verhoeven movie.

And it’s silly to say the movie looks like it doesn’t have emotion or is just a shoot em up based on the first trailer. Did you really expect them to market this like a chick flick?

  • VenusVille

    Soooooo…wheres the chick with 3 tits? Seriously…

  • Douglas Quaid

    Benny!! Screeeeeeew yooooooou!!!!!

  • J-rad

I liked that trailer much more than I thought I would. I am not in love with the original as some people are so I am open to this idea being more serious and dare I say “gritty” than the original movie.

I mean in all reality this isnt so much a remake of an original movie ( Since it doesnt take place on Mars) as it is a re-telling of a story that someone else happened to already make a movie about.

Haters need to cool there jets a bit. Stories have been retold, remade, reimagined and changed since the beginning of time.

  • Alex–

The only exciting thing in the trailer is Beckinsale as a villain.
