With Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 animated Lord of the Rings movie finally getting released on Blu-ray April 6th, Warner Bros. has just released a trailer and the cover art. While the Blu-ray has a new featurette called Forging Through the Darkness: The Ralph Bakski Vision for The Lord of the Rings and a new 5.1 mix, I wish there was a documentary about the making of the film or some new interviews. After all, this version of LOTR has been around for almost 30 years and I would have liked to have seen some of that history on the DVD. But no matter what, it’s still going to be cool to check this thing out on Blu-ray. Hit the jump for more:
Also, the reason this Blu-ray is being released on April 6th is Warner Bros. is also releasing Peter Jackson’s version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy on Blu-ray the same day. And while that should be a cause for celebration, most fans are quite upset as it’s only the theatrical editions and not the extended versions. So if you were all set to buy them…I’d wait till next year for the good versions to hit Blu-ray.
What I also love is the Amazon page (Lord of the Rings Blu-ray) that has 1,511 reviews of the Blu-ray with 1,318 of them being one star due to the lack of the extended editions. Good job everyone.

Bakshi's LOTR is a terrible, TERRIBLE film. A complete failure on every level.
Unless this release has some seriously awesome special features I despair for any LORD OF THE RINGS fan who actually buys it.
I still consider Bakshi's adaptation to one of the worst animated films of all time. It felt like a lazy experiment instead of an acceptable movie, full of horrid characterizations (Sam came off as a gay hobbit with ADD), ugly animation, and some truly hilarious, overdramatic vocal performances (“SARUUUMAAAAAAAN! SARRRRUUUUUMAAAN!”).
