Recently, the upcoming fantasy-adventure flick “Cirque du Freak” starring John C. Reilly, Salma Hayek, and Chris Massoglia, had its title changed to “The Vampire’s Apprentice”.  I thought the new title was a little dull but since there appears to be a never-ending string of vampire flicks out there, I guess they need apprentices to learn the vampire trade and sort their mail.  But Universal has now reached a compromise with “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Apprentice” which is now the first installment in the “Cirque du Freak” SAGA (vampires need sagas; they’re deep and tortured creatures).

With all that in mind, the marketing campaign for the film begins in earnest with both a trailer and a poster for the upcoming flick.  Hit the jump to check them out along with a couple new photos.  “Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assitant” hits theaters on October 23rd.

The poster is a little dull (and you’ve already seen it), but the trailer is pretty fantastic.  It provides a nice sense of horror, comedy, and adventure.  Plus, you get to see John C. Reilly kicking some ass so that’s worth the price of admission alone.  I also dig the new images and while every film wants to be a franchise, I can get behind this film (at least judging from the images and trailer) because it’s got an interesting premise and a look that no other film has right now.   If it was an original property (it’s based on a book series), then it would have my total support (it has about 85% right now).

For those just tuning in, here’s a brief synopsis:

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, based on the popular series of books by Darren Shan, is a fantasy-adventure about a teenager who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires.  Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.

16-year-old Darren (Chris Massoglia) was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood.  He hung out with his best friend Steve (Josh Hutcherson), got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble.  But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren.  That’s the exact moment when a vampire named Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty.

Newly undead, he joins the Cirque Du Freak, a touring sideshow filled with monstrous creatures from a snakeboy and a wolfman to a bearded lady (Salma Hayek) and a gigantic barker (Ken Watanabe).  As Darren flexes his newfound powers in this dark world, he becomes a treasured pawn between the vampires and their deadlier counterparts.  And while trying to survive, one boy will struggle to keep their brewing war from devouring what’s left of his humanity.

I am a HUGE fan of the Cirque-Du-Freak saga, and I was a bit surprised, (even though in actuality it’s nothing really to be surprised about), when I heard movie of this saga was coming out. I remember it was a really long time ago when I first picked up one of those books..But anyways, I was surprised when I saw who was playing Mr. Crepsley, I was really dissappointed. I don’t know, I’ve been thinking about it all month, but I just really wanted to say that. I really didn’t expect him to turn out like that. I expected him to be like a tall, kind of dark, quiet.. With a small crop of orange hair on his head.. Like as described in the book. When I saw John C. Reilly in the trailer, I was wondering who he was, then I figured out that he was Mr. Crepsley, I almost passed out. So I’m really dissapointed. I’m also really curious about this Rachel character. Where did she come from? Haha. What about Debbie? Steve and Evra look great. But whatever, I’ll stop ranting now, because nothing is perfect. But even still, I really want to go see it, and I can’t wait for it to come out!

I LOVED this movie!!! It was so much fun!! The showig of the credits (in the beginning) was amazing….I loved the art work = nearly James Bondish….very clever. I have never seen John C. Reilly in anything but NOW I am a BIG fan. This movie was fun, exciting, interesting, adorable – everything I LOVE in a movie!! I am 56 and my husband is 57 and we both loved it. Will probably see t again before it leaves the theatre.

My husband, son Josh, and I just saw the movie yesterday. We loved it. Even children as young as 11 can enjoy this movie. Our Josh loves Halloween, and this movie came out just in time for him. when I heard this movie was based on a series of books, I just know I will read all of them. John C. Reilly did a great job, and the two boys were believable in their roles. This was better than the witch movies.

My husband and I just saw the movie and loved it. I have never read the books, so had no expectations about what any of the characters should look like or what the movie should be. It stands well on its own as entertainment. John C. Reilly is a wonderful actor, with an amazing speaking voice. I thought he made a terrific vampire. The movie was fun and entertaining. The opening title graphics were cleverly done, very much like wood cuts. I think I’ll probably see it again.

i love the books and hope they sell well but, i am not happy that mr crepsley is being played by that actor… it in not sopost to be a comedy film and i am disapointed, because they could of made a better fitted actor in stead, for the part..

You are obviously aware that my book, The Vampire's Apprentice is already for sale in Amazon. I wrote it many years ago.

I have even a film script for it.

I loved this movie….now I have to search around for the books this was based upon by Darren Shan…I HAVE to read them!! (crazy since I'm 36 & usually prefer King or Koontz)

I had not read the books before I watched the movie, so I didn't know who Mr. Crepsley was or how he should be: therefore, I really liked the role and actor who played him. I hope I am not disappointed when I do read them!!

I’m curious as to whether or not their making a part 2 :|

I absouletly love these books and I literally have a hunger for them. I’m sad I didn’t get to see Sam and the crazy R.V., but the movie was still spectacular. I’m 13 and I loved both the movie and books. I’m really disapointed it doesn’t look like they’re making a sequel. I would be so incredibly amazed to see it turn out rather than little prancing sparkly vampires. Gah, that’s just horrible and low to call vampires that. The books make vampires great again, rather than ones who’s gutless.

I loved the books, but sadly they failed the movie. If it was made properly after the books it would have been bigger the harry potter. But they messed up a LOT and ruined the chance of a sequel.

the movie is fine by it’s self but aweful if you’ve read the books. Darren is not suppose to know that Steve is a vampaneze until 12 years after he turned into a half vampire and Steve is suppose to be a lot older!

and who is that monkey girl? she ruined everything =0 she wasn’t in the books at all and the only girl darren cared about , fell in love with too, was Debbie!

    such a shame this movie…
