The trailer for the documentary Best Worst Movie has landed online along with a list of cities that will have premieres featuring the cast plus an after party.  Best Worst Movie is about the cult that has grown up around the awful 1990 horror movie Troll 2.  The film is ranked #59 in IMDb’s Bottom 100 and has a 0% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

But the worst movies pick up the most devoted audiences.  I don’t think any low-budget film deserves the title of “worst” because at least they didn’t throw away millions upon millions of dollars to make garbage.  But it does take skill to make something that hits that right level of so-bad-it’s-good.  You can’t set out to make that kind of movie.  It has to come about organically.  I personally love movies about movies so I look forward to hating that I missed this when it comes to Atlanta on July 23rd when I’m at Comic-Con.

Hit the jump to see the trailer and find out when Best Worst Movie is coming to your town.

Here’s the official synopsis for Best Worst Movie:

Best Worst Movie is the acclaimed  feature length documentary that takes us on an off-beat journey into the undisputed worst movie in cinematic history: Troll 2.

In 1989, when an Italian filmmaker and unwitting Utah actors shot the ultra-low budget horror film, Troll 2, they had no idea that twenty years later they would be celebrated worldwide for their legendary ineptitude.

Two decades later, the film’s now-grown-up child star (Michael Paul Stephenson) unravels the improbable, heartfelt story of the Alabama dentist-turned-cult movie icon and the Italian filmmaker who come to terms with this genuine, internationally revered cinematic failure.

Is Troll 2 really the worst movie ever made as claimed by IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes? Or is Troll 2, as some would claim, a misunderstood masterpiece that never fails to entertain… a work of genius? Twenty years after Troll 2 was made, the feature length documentary BEST WORST MOVIE explores the Troll 2 phenomenon through the personal story of the cast of characters that took part in its creation and why it is celebrated by fans worldwide.

Yeah I tried watching Troll 2 on Hulu but I wasn't digging it, I think its really only worth it if you watch it with a group of friends and make fun of it.

PS: Was there ever a Troll 1? lol, that would be epic if they just called it Troll 2 without there having ever been a first one.

Highly recommend this film. Saw it at the Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham last year, b/c the star of Troll 2 is now a local dentist. The film really focuses on his and the other actors experiences in the film and the long term success of the film's cult status.

Very funny. Favorite line of the film. From the Italian Director of Troll 2, attending a screening, “I don't understand. They laugh-a at tha unfunny parts.”

There is a Troll 1, but Troll 2 has nothing to do with that one. There is not actually trolls in the movie. The Italian film crew didn't realize the difference between trolls and goblins, so there are goblins in the movie Troll 2 instead.
