The trailer for Julie Taymor’s adaptation of William Shakepeare’s The Tempest has gone online.  While Taymor’s impressive visual style is on display, the tone of the film looks all over the place as it ranges from “Passion” to “Treachery” to “Stupidity”.  Despite a great cast that includes Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina, David Strathairn, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, Russell Brand, and Djimon Hounsou, the film has received poor notices at festivals.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The Tempest opens December 10th.

Here’s the synopsis for The Tempest:

In her big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s mystical thriller “The Tempest,” Academy Award(R)-nominated Julie Taymor (“Across the Universe,” “Frida,” “Titus”) brings an original dynamic to the story by changing the gender of the sorcerer Prospero into the sorceress Prospera, portrayed by Oscar(R) winner Helen Mirren (“The Queen”). Prospera’s journey spirals through vengeance to forgiveness as she reigns over a magical island, cares for her young daughter, Miranda, and unleashes her powers against shipwrecked enemies in this exciting, masterly mix of romance, tragicomedy and the supernatural.

    • as movies or as plays? if you’re asking about plays, then that’s like an absurd question to ask. It’s like saying that the Bible means jack since it’s ‘old’.

    • Not really, Shakespeare’s plays are folk tales, hardly representative in power or meaning as mythology and I would include the old testament. They are on the same level as Chaucer’s Tale, a relic of the past.

You need to completely update the story to have it remain relevant. The only Shakespeare movie that used the the same dialogue was Romeo + Juliet, and even that was set in a dystopian future world.

  1. Yeah this movie looks just as bad as Across the Universe, a failed attempt at a 60s flashback. Russell Brand looks funny as usually, this movie looks like a B-movie to laugh at. Crappy version of Labyrinth anyone?

  3. Even if I had been able to muster interest in this one, it was killed the moment Russell Brand showed up. Aren’t his 15 mins WAY over now?

  4. Taymor is to Broadway as Burton is to film. Though apparently Taymor wouldn’t mind being the entire analogy.
