Yahoo! Movies has just debuted the trailer for Richard Linklater’s “Me and Orson Welles” starring Zac Efron and Claire Danes.  While you should know that Efron does not play Welles, it’s not like the movie now looks like a must-see.  I’ve been sitting here for about ten minutes trying to think of one positive thing to say about this movie and I’m at a loss.  I don’t like Linklater and the trailer makes this look like drama-free coming-of-age tale.

The trailer and a brief synopsis are after the jump.  Maybe you’ll have an easier time finding a silver lining than I did.  “Me and Orson Welles” begins a limited release on November 25th.

In a whirlwind week in 1937 in New York City, a young aspiring actor named Richard is thrown into the middle of Orson Welles Mercury Theatre Company on the eve of the opening of Welles historic staging of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. During this week he will find romance with a worldly older woman, becomes immersed in a creative experience few are afforded and learn the downside of crossing the imperious, brilliant Welles. Richard is about to grow up fast.

I didn’t watch the trailer, but I saw thi movie way back at TIFF last year. It was a pretty enjoyable movie. A light and fun tone, a great performance by the guy playing Welles, and Zac Efron is quite a charming guy.

I think you’re right that the dramatic conflict is underplayed in this trailer, but I also think the fact that you see nothing in it says more about you than about the movie. This isn’t Transformers 2 or Paul Blart we’re talking about here.

What do I see in it?

The guy playing Orson Welles nails Welles’ manner and speech patterns and I want to see more.
Knowing that they stage even a small portion of Welles’ version of Julius Caesar really intrigues me. Admittedly that is more of a theater geek thing than a film geek thing maybe, but I want to see what they do with it.
The costume and set design looks good.
It has quite a few awesome secondary players like Eddie Marsan.
    Personally I like Linklater.

So all in all, I see a lot of things that make me want to see it, even with the untested Zac Efron.
