Sometimes dreams really do come true and the amazing Ben Foster, one of the best actors not headline movies, is finally headlining movies. He was the only draw for me to see “Pandorum” and if the response to that movie wasn’t so overwhelmingly negative (with Foster getting a pass of “OK”), I would’ve seen it. But I’ll definitely be in line to see “The Messenger” where he plays a soldier who informs the next of kin when their loved one is killed in action. I don’t want to categorize this as an “Iraq War” movie because these soldiers have always been around but simply as a war movie which is one of the reasons I think this year’s critically acclaimed “The Hurt Locker” was so effective. With talented actors like Woody Harrelson, Samantha Morton, and Jena Malone backing him up, I hope that “The Messenger” lets studios and audiences know that Foster deserves to be on the A-list.

For those just tuning in, here’s a brief synopsis:
In his most powerful performance to date, Ben Foster stars as Will Montgomery, a U.S. Army officer who has just returned home from a tour in Iraq and is assigned to the Army’s Casualty Notification service. Partnered with fellow officer Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson) to bear the bad news to the loved ones of fallen soldiers, Will faces the challenge of completing his mission while seeking to find comfort and healing back on the home front. When he finds himself drawn to Olivia (Samantha Morton), to whom he has just delivered the news of her husband’s death, Will’s emotional detachment begins to dissolve and the film reveals itself as a surprising, humorous, moving and very human portrait of grief, friendship and survival.
Featuring tour-de-force performances from Foster, Harrelson and Morton, and a brilliant directorial debut by Oren Moverman, THE MESSENGER brings us into the inner lives of these outwardly steely heroes to reveal their fragility with compassion and dignity.

Foster is a decent actor. His acting chops does not come close to Leo Dicaprio, Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington, Sean Penn, Robert Downey JR., Will Smith, Daniel Craig, George Clooney, Clive Owen.These are true A- Listers.
I compare Foster to Adrien Brody, Shia Lebouef, Ryan Gossling, etc

Everyone on your A-List is AT LEAST 10 years older than Foster. On top of that they all have long established their ranks in the movie industry. So, I don’t think your comparison is exactly fair.
If Ben Foster could travel back in time and compete for roles with those people at same age, he would definitely be right up there with them, if not out-act a bunch of them.
He is one of the most underrated actors out there. He is especially brilliant in roles of damaged/psychopathic/broken characters.
Watch “Bang Bang You’re Dead”, “Birds of America”, “Alpha Dog” or even some episodes of “Freaks and Geeks”.
If that’s not A-list acting, then some of today’s “stars” are really fucked.
