The trailer for Kenneth Branagh’s Thor has gone online. It’s comprised mostly of the footage that was shown at Comic-Con (and later leaked online), but I think this trailer is better cut together. It’s clear that they’ve done some nifty effects work in the past five months, and I think this is a solid first trailer that will get people interested. It’s worth nothing that I’ve never been one of the people that think the costumes or sets look cheesy. I dig the aesthetic they’re going for and it feels like it will be a fresh spin on the superhero genre.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Thor stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Rene Russo, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg, Jaimie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Joshua Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, and Anthony Hopkins. It opens in 3D on May 6, 2011.

Here’s the official synopsis for Thor:

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment present the epic adventure, “Thor,” which spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful, young scientist, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), has a profound effect on Thor, as she ultimately becomes his first love. It’s while here on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

these artsy fartsy directors like kenneth branaguh and ang lee don’t get it. comics speak for themselves they have a history and don’t need tampering with. be careful.

After seeing the trailer, a lot of my fears have been put to rest. I’m still not 100% on board, but I’m getting there. Looking good. Love the aesthetic as well.

You know what I hate, posters who say something is lame or ass, but don’t give any reason for it.

I think the film looks pretty exiting personally. Thor looks like Thor, the costumes looks good and hammer fight scenes look like they’ll be a highlight.

I’ll be interested to hear the opinion of people who aren’t comic book savy as I think this is Marvel’s biggest sell – a God superhero? The blending of the Earth and Asgard based action will be key as will giving Thor some vulnerability.

I do like the use of Agent Coulson in the trailer to link it to Iron Man for general cinema audiences.

This is a key film for Marvel. Iron Man has been a success and this is really the first non-Iron Man film to appear since The Avengers movie gained momentum. It’s success or failure will have a great impact on the Marvel studio plans I think. After the failure of The Incredible Hulk (which I personally enjoyed), Marvel need a non-Iron Man related box office win to confirm they’ve made the right choice in planning so far ahead.

No matter who does a usaperhero movie with this “3d action blockbuster template”* that’s the new trend, is going to end with he same crappy result.
*and to set record straight, the template of Nolan is not the same one

The guy looks laughable with that beard

Sorry but the guy playing Thor is cheesy and the rest of the cast seems weak.I love Natalie but I believes she’s on board because of a possibly weak script. Speculation throws Hopkins into the fire also. I saw threw the special effects. The movie is going to suck a**!

Looks fantastic like this trailer because the effects is more finish, and action scenes is so great.

  • dogg

Well, they appear to be taking it seriously–not sneering at the audience Michael Bay style. That’s half the battle right there.

  • Lt. Ripley

Why is the trailer not working for me? Even if I go to the Yahoo! website it doesn’t work. Anybody else having this problem?

  • colliderzilla

well look at that. not bad. I’m in. any haters out there, don’t bother commenting, just don’t go see it. any fanboys, it’s not perfect, but looks decent so far. BTW, the incredible hulk was bad, no discussion needed. as i always say, a movie can be bad and people still like it. that’s fine, we live in America but don’t watch poop and try to convince me it’s Mozart. just saying. there’s plenty of poop out there that i like i just don’t kid myself into believing it’s something it’s not.

I liked the trailer, but do not get the ‘gritty’ sentiment. If anything, this looks like a ‘Flash Gordon’-style entertainment: fun and glossy, with more of a wink to the audience that this is not Shakespearian drama.

muck like transformers 3 and cowboys and aliens, the thor trailer fucking kicks ass. the action seems epic, the visual effects look almost finished and photoreal(unlike green lantern), the actors seem good enough to me and ken branagh and marvel studios are doing a pretty badass job so far. see you in may 6th.
