We recently saw three teaser videos for Wally Pfister’s Transcendence, but the first full trailer is now available, and it looks very promising.  Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) stars as Dr. Will Caster, a researcher at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence science, who becomes intimately entwined with his research after an attack by the anti-technology terrorist group, R.I.F.T.  Pfister’s dramatic cinematography is in full display, but the themes he’s decided to tackle make his directorial debut all the more interesting for me.  Except for one head-scratcher of a plot point in this first trailer (you’ll know it when you hear it), I’m already putting Transcendence high on my “Most Anticipated” list of 2014 films.

Also starring Paul BettanyRebecca HallKate MaraCillian MurphyClifton Collins Jr., and Morgan FreemanTranscendence opens in 2D and IMAX on April 17, 2014.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

Here’s the official synopsis for Transcendence:

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

Is it just me or does this look absolutely ludicrous?

      Watch out Ray Kurzwell

You take 150 vitamins a day to live long enough until robots can make you immortal. Sounds pretty sane to me.

    • Jack le Critic

No, it’s ridiculous…and pretty much guaranteed to be crap

    • Solgazer

      Just you.

  • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

It’s refreshing to see Johnny Depp playing something different. I am fed up of Jack Sparrow.

    • Willy Billy

You are fed up of Sparrow? He only played that character 4 times!

tonto = sparrow = mad hatter

      • Willy Billy

They are nothing alike actually. Just because they are quirky and over the top it doesn’t make them similar.

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

the only thing that changes is the costume. Same grimaces, same play.

      • Willy Billy

        No.

  • Colin Christian

Wow! It’s just a matter of time until this happens,it’s important we consider the consequences,at least movies can prepare the way….this looks great.

  • Faptain America

Looks quite interesting. I’ll be there. I don’t know what plot point you were talking about, Dave.

    • scheebles

I assume he’s talking about the “radiation bullet”.

      • Dave Trumbore

        That’s a bingo.

      • Faptain America

I just thought whoever shot him wanted to make sure he died, thus the bullet laced with radioactive material to poison him.

      • scheebles

If you belong to a terrorist group and wanted to make sure a target is killed… shoot him in the head? Shoot him more than once? Lacing the bullet with radioactive material seems very… Blowfield of them. Or Lex Luthor. Take your pick lol.

      • TheDevil’sAdvocate

Pretty sure it was inspired by that Russian defector who got radiation poisoning in London. It’s a neat idea and it makes sense – if the assassin were to fuck up, at least the radiation could do it.

      • scheebles

Except that that defector was involved in espionage level stuff and his assassination was meant to cause confusion. This is a public assassination in which even for the radiation poison to kick in you’d have to get the bullet into his body anyways. I don’t know. It just seems silly and over-the-top to me.

The only way it makes sense is if he was so wanting to transfer his consciousness but his wife was unable to bring herself to agree unless it was the only option. So he has it done to himself in order to force the issue. And that’s just silly as well.

      • Norbert Korzus

Better safe than sory. A more deadly bullet is a bad thing if you want to kill someone?

      • axalon

It seems very “we need him to die slow as a plot device”

      • milo

Exactly, it totally comes off as them needing an excuse for him to inevitably die and were too lazy to think of something more plausible.

Looks like it has the potential to be a decent and interesting movie but that one thing is a pretty blatant contrivance to get past.

      • axalon

It seems very “we need him to die slow as a plot device”

      • sivaprrasath

What if it is by design and not by the idiocy of the terrorist or whoever that was. Maybe Depp’s character designed his death.
        Just putting it out there

      • scheebles

I said that above. It would make more sense but still be a bit silly.

@Norbert You don’t have to expose bullets to radioactive material to make them more deadly.you can modify them in WAY easier ways. Hollow points? Armor piercing rounds?

  • mattinacan

wow that does look fantastic and gorgeous

  • Diego Fernando Salazar Proaño

Looks really interesting and refreshing to see Johnny Depp as a “normal person”. Still, I think they should hire to score the film to the guy(s) who scored the teasers.

  • Steven

Nolan (Pfister) fanboys love this type of lark. I found Inception to be overrated.

This looks great in places. Love Bettany.

  • NICK НΛRT

looks interesting and potentially batshit crazy

  • Brad

“Pfister’s dramatic cinematography is in full display, but the themes he’s decided to tackle make his directorial debut all the more interesting for me.”

What? Jess Hall photographed it and it looks a low lower contrast than Pfister’s work in general.

  • Jamesy

Refreshing to see Depp in more of a “normal” role. That trailer creeped me out slighly because it feels like it’s only a matter of time before this is possible. Looks cool.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sangbaran Sam

Nice to see Rebecca Hall going places after Parade’s End.

  • Matty

Cool! Johnny Depp as a normal person! Oh wait, nope, still got that white face makeup.

    • Willy Billy

Where? Oh you mean when they upload his brain into a computer? That makeup is needed to make him look pale.

      • Matty

Yup, still managed to add another white faced character to his list. Not dissing the trailer, I just think it’s funny.

      • Willy Billy

Umm didn’t I just say that he is only white faced when they are uploading his brain into the computer? He looks normal for the most part of the movie so no it’s not another ehite faced chracter.

      • Matty

        Exactly. He’s white faced.

  • ʝoe ßloggs

Tony Stark and Dr. Will Tasker have proved that it is possible to achieve significant scientific breakthroughs after you make out with Rebecca Hall.

In either case, JARVIS was somehow involved.

    • The Flobbit

      It’s Will Caster…

      • ʝoe ßloggs

Before or after he ‘transcended’ with Rebecca Hall? heh heh

  • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

    Lol
    That was an awful trailer
    Lol
    The movie looks fucking ridiculous
Well, What’s another flop in Johnny Depp’s career anyway ?
He should stick to jack sparrow and the hatter
No one wants to see him in anything else

    • Hipsters Fade Away Fast

Pajama Boy, drink your cocoa and settle down! Otherwise you won’t get storytime before bed.

    • EBITDA

This “mixed race rich kid is such a loser….hahahaha….he probably transferred in to NYU because he couldn’t get in as a regular candidate…he probably got preferred treatment for being a mixed race…hahahaha….loser. This guy has such a complex…he is on every article on Collider. Has he ever had sex? the answer is a big “NO”. poor child. His complex is so huge it’s crushing him. This movie looks great. Doubt “MixedRaceRichKidNYC” is smart enough to recognize a good movie when he sees it. Given the title of his user name, he’s probably more into XXX or Tyler Perry movies….hahahahahahha…..I hope he responds!

      • yea

yay lets call out his sex life. its never been done before! just keep it to his movie taste. you are going lower then he is.

    meh

  • Christina

This looks f***ing nuts! I’m in! Definitely it will be in my list of most anticipated films of 2014.

  • Chris

God, this looks so try hard and boring. And yes, Depp a complete snooze fest as an actor.

    • Alex

You don’t know anything about good acting if you think his acting is complete snooze fest here.

      • Chris

If Depp’s lame and lazy acting impresses you, I doubt you go see really interesting movies. But then again Disney Depp doesn’t make interesting movies anyway.

  • Man pippy

This makes alot of sense. It’s very likely we’ll first develop the technology to upload a consciousness into a computer before we develop a sentient A.i.

  • Dan

I’m surprised they said “From Director Wally Pfister and not “From Producer Christopher Nolan” seeing how one is a bigger name

    • bidi

the Wally name drop confused me too. i feel like unless you go to this site or another like it, most people will be like “who the fuck is Wally Pfister.” and then they’ll look him up on imdb and be like, “oh, he hasn’t ever directed anything before. glad i know his name now”

  • thermoplasticity

I don’t understand how so many people are gushing over this. It looks like a crappy B-movie thriller from the 80s. I was expecting something SO much more than this. I mean, it might be good, but it looks pretty cheesy so far.

    • jackjakc

Oh, I agree. Thought the same – about the connection between this and the 80′s sci-fi movies. Nolan & Co. are known as people proclaiming big ideas and ending with unsatisfying, often pretentious results, so I don’t expect from “Transcendence” and Nolan’s next project to be any different.

  • Twy2700

    This looks Ridiculous

  • Redjester

Ok, I’m confused. How does him implanting his brain into a computer give him the powers of (essentially) Dr. Manhattan??

    • ʝoe ßloggs

Please refer to Automan. Thank you.

      • Redjester

Haha, nice Automan shoutout. I had almost forgot about that!

That might have been a passable premise in the infancy of the computer, but now-a-days we (or at least I) like our science fiction a little more believable. They could have done so much with this premise while still keeping it contained within a plausible world. No need to go all pseudoscience on us!

      • Willy Billy

Umm did you watch the whole movie?

      • Redjester

Do you mean Automan (the show) or Transcendence the film? Anyway, the trailer gives enough of the film away to know that logic has left the door with this film. Unless you already believe in fairy tales (religion), then perhaps this might seem perfectly rational to you.

Again, I’d like to reiterate that I am still to some degree looking forward to this as I rarely don’t see a science fiction film no matter how poor, and this doesn’t even look bad per say (in fact it looks really well made and fun). I just prefer my science fiction to be more plausible then his body/soul/whatever figuring out a way to leave the computer and enter the real world. Cool premise, but totally unrealistic no matter how far in the future it takes place.

      • Willy Billy

Umm did you watch the whole movie?

      • Redjester

Haha, nice Automan shoutout. I had almost forgot about that!

I am experiencing something very bizarre after watching this trailer. I am not in the ‘ can’t wait to watch this’ level nor am I in the ‘ looks interesting ‘ or ‘ I think I’ll pass on this’ I’m numb about it. It’s just not a new concept. I’ve actually seen this movie before TRON, TRON Legacy, RoboCop, Matrix, Terminator, iRobot, Ai, WallE and the likes – it’s just not new anymore. For some reason even the CGI isn’t compelling excitement out of me. If I watch this I know I’m going to be constantly replaying OTHER movies in my head in certain scenes or just being plain bored. It’s just not new anymore and unless it has something that is philosophically compelling – it’s just not going to do very well. This trailer hasn’t done anything to excite me at all and the synopsis isn’t very compelling.

  • jay

im always going to get excited about somthing that looks interesting and different then the normal big blockbuster fair. it does look a little like updated version of Lawnmower Man but that movie was badass. so im in

  • Redjester

I have to admit that even though I am more than a little disappointed with the b.s. that is Dr. Will Castor’s soul(?) escaping the computer program in the form of black sand/smoke and it wreaking havoc on the world (as I feel this premise has left logic at the door), as a lover of all-things science fiction, I do plan to still watch the movie, albeit probably on my computer.

Interstellar on the other hand… Let’s just say I am counting the days!

  • Why?

    Anyone remember The Lawnmower Man?

  • poppincherry

Bullshit wouldn’t play so I went to youtube. The acting seems scripted when it shouldn’t be. I get the idea. Kill the scientist, hook him up to his baby and then watch as his theory comes to life in more ways than your can imagine. His wife loves him so much she empathizes with him throughout the movie until she can’t because he’s hurting innocent people.
Here is what the final act will most likely be.
His wife will tire of his shit by the end of the 2nd act and destroy him in 3rd. Oh she’ll be crying with lots of snot running out her noise. Yeah, yeah! I suspect she’ll get to the CORE of his power, lock loaded with a fucking bomb strapped to her abs.
Or, she’ll be implanted with a computer virus by an Indian computer scientist who found a back door that she would carry to Depp after being hooked up to his machine. She’ll sacrifice herself in the 3rd act to shut his ass down.
    That’s my 2 cents.

Mr Pfister was quoted as saying he was a fan of 70′s sci-fi before Star Wars. That is good news. Bring on a piece like Colossus: The Forbin Project please. That kind of scope and ambition is too rare nowadays.

    Awesome explanation, man…

My first thought after seeing this was of Dr. Manhattan, someone else mentioned Automan, and still more think it a remake of Lawnmower Man. I’m curious who is closer to the truth…
