Serious Injury to Female Extra Suspends Chicago Shooting of TRANSFORMERS 3

Filming on Transformers 3 was suspended Thursday after a stunt gone awry reportedly resulted in the serious injury of a 24-year-old extra in East Chicago. The Michael Bay action sequel was shooting an elaborate car stunt on a closed highway when a cable connecting two cars snapped, whipped around and the car crashed. The woman inside the car, Gabriella Cedillo, wasn’t a member of the stunt team and was airlifted to the hospital. [Update: The AP reports that she is in critical condition.]

Hit the jump for more details and some video footage of the accident scene.

According to a local ABC affiliate, who spoke to a fellow extra, when the wire snapped, it sliced through the car and through Cedillo’s head. The car then slammed into the divider on a stretch of Cline Avenue and didn’t stop for about half a mile.

Thursday was scheduled to be the final day of Chicago shooting on the film, in Millennium Park, but the day was canceled.

E! Online says that Paramount/Dreamworks has yet to comment on the accident.

So why was the extra in the car? Shouldn’t it have been a stunt woman? I guarantee that if this woman survives, she’s going to get a nice little settlement from Paramount. I’ve had a feeling that someone was going to die on a Michael Bay set some day. Have you ever seen behind the scenes of his films? His sets look like death traps with stunts going wrong left and right and people almost getting destroyed by flying cars and debris.

Lets not forget the deaths during the Spiderman, and Dark Knight productions.

So dont talk shit of Michael Bay cause hes just the Director not a production coordinator, or Production supervisor, or extra supervisor or any other role where he would be held responsible… Unless you also plan on talking shit of Christopher Nolan who’s Nuts you love to hug.

can we talk shit about michael bay being a horrible director?

This is crazy I can’t believe this actually happened. A couple of years ago I knew a guy who had this happen but the kids were throwing rocks at the car. He landed up crashing and spending over a month in the hospital he was lucky enough to have worked with http://www.slipandfallattorney.com and they helped him get some of his medical bills paid for. I think that people need to be more careful around vehicles.

This accident is an omen that changing female co-star will result in a failure at the box-office.

Michael Bay does call all the shots on his sets! He treats extras as if they were annoying rock props. This is not surprising that this horrible injury occurred. Those who continue to allow his careless directing go on should be ashamed of themselves and be held responsible. It is no secret that he cares little for human safety or comfort, it is all about the shot with him.

and im sure that you have actual eye witness evidence of this, right? i mean, it wouldnt be remotely acceptable to just spew out this slander about a person you’ve never worked with or even seen work, right? And no, im not a michael bay fan by any stretch, and transformers 2 is probably the worst blockbuster summer flick ive ever seen. i just try to be more reasonable about who or what i talk about.

oops I should clarify something. Its is not ONLY about getting the shot with Michael, it is also about saving a buck (you know, since they dont have much to spare). Which is why they probably threw an extra in the car vS a contracted stunt performer.

Sorry to be ‘that guy’ but you don’t know how a movie set works. At all.

Can you tell me how one works?

Sure. Film in Chicago alone will involve a mass of paperwork in itself, for the safety of the crew and residents. Anything from filming a simple dialogue scene involves a filming permit from the local council, who take into consideration many things, for smaller movies or something that involves no hassle usually have no problem at this stage, with something the size of Transformers, you have the safety of residents, the damage to the environment but also jobs that the film will bring. Some cities offer tax credits to entice films because of this.
When a location scout goes out they take what is known as a reccee (rec-e), a health and safety assessment and even after this location was picked, another one would be taken in even more detail.
The stunt team, special effects co-ordinator teams will also take their own H&S assessments to make sure the location is suitable. Now, when you hear about a director hiring a stunt co-ordinator or whoever, they’re (as in the studio) hiring an external company. Those people don’t work for the director per say. It’s like catering or a special effects house, it’s outsourced, for instance, Michael Bay couldn’t fire someone at ILM.
On actual location, safety is paramount, your no longer in charge of safety of the crew but the public. Now, i don’t know what happened with this particular stunt. I can tell you before hand it was checked, that extensive planning did go into it, off site.
I don’t know why an extra was involved with said stunt, or if she was involved with said stunt but what i do know is what didn’t happen, which is that Michael Bay, in his poor view of human life, seeing extras as expendable, decided to put one into a stunt because she’s cheaper than a trained stunt double to make the shoot look better.
Sorry for the rambling and incoherence and i’ve probably left something out but i work as a production assistant and worked on stuff that’s involved special effects, stunts etc… although nothing of this scale.

I say he swapped the stunt girl for the extra cause she was hotter looking.

You know he would do something like that.
