Earlier this week, we reported that Michael Bay would be rebooting his own damn franchise with Transformers 4, an idea so stupid that it’s truly fitting of these movies.  In a recent interview with E! Online, Josh Duhamel says he’s not coming back for the sequel and neither is anyone else:

“I don’t think anybody’s doing it. I know Shia [LaBoeuf]‘s not doing it. I don’t think Tyrese or Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley] or anybody else is doing it.”

Take this with a grain of salt.  Actors are the last to know anything regarding a movie’s production.  LaBeouf previously stated Transformers: Dark of the Moon was his last one, but then again, so did Bay.  Either way, it’s not like the cast makes much of a difference in these movies.  Transformers 4 opens June 29, 2014. [Update: Some new and more reliable rumors have surfaced regarding the film.  Hit the jump for more.]

While Duhamel is talking about casting for a movie that doesn’t even have a script yet, Badass Digest has some more believable news regarding the plans for the sequel.  The movie will be a true sequel and follow the events of Transformers: Dark of the Moon but the “reboot” aspect comes from changing the point-of-view from Sam Witwicky to the Transformers.  That’s not a horrible idea and it’s a worthwhile approach provided they write strong characters.  If you end up writing transformers like Skids and Mudflap, the movie will be unbearable.

Additionally, a source tells BD that the movie will be more like the last hour of Transformers: Dark of the Moon.  That means a lot more action (if that’s even possible, but I’m sure Bay will find a way) and a lot less silly humor.  Since intentional humor hasn’t really been the series’ strong suit (although there were plenty of fun moments in the first movie), I wouldn’t mind cutting back on stuff that doesn’t work.  Stuff that did work: Jon Voight‘s pronunciation of the word “robot”.

Of course, filming is still a ways off so all of this can change, but these non-casting rumors are at least beginning to get me back on board with a new Transformers movie.

“Michael realized it needs to be more like the last hour [of Dark of the Moon],” this source told me. So expect lots of big action, lots of carnage, lots of military badasses, very few silly bits.

Yeah, “reboot” is stupid at this point. The Bond franchise has survived by “rebooting” its cast and progressively modernizing its stories (even if Casino Royale was a prequel it doesn’t necessarily erase Bond’s previous adventures).

However from what I’ve read on the web, it seems the word “reboot” was used by di Bonaventura in error at an interview and the studio’s none too happy about it.

From what I’ve read it does NOT seem like Bay is calling this a reboot. When I first heard “reboot” i thought — what are they crazy? Have they REALLY doomed franchises to 3 picture cycles I was relieved to hear it will not necessarily be a restart.

Oh my fuck collider FIRE GOLDBERG

  • BobaFett

They are not doing it, because their original contracts meant they made little (averaged about 250k per movie), excepting Shia. And were obligated to do them. When Dushamel, can make 800k or more to do less work on Rom Coms.
Although Mr Fergie doesn’t need the money anyway.

IMO, Shia might be back but that’s about it. Nobody cares about the people anyway. It’s a Michael Bay movie for Christ’s sake. Hot chicks(that cost less than $50k + robots + ‘splosions = Win.

Another moronic article by the Hack Goldberg. It’s ironic how you bash others in the same articles that prove how lame and pathetic you are.

Frosty, listen to your readers and kick this moron out of this website. Yes, his idiotic articles bring people here (who make fun of him 24/7), but he’s also turning your site into a complete joke.

And Frosty, you as a fan of Transformers, should write the articles about the franchise. Not the puncing bag Hack Goldberg.

*sigh* I know we’re not supposed to feed the trolls, but this is getting ridiculous.

The hate for Matt Goldberg by the commenters on this site is ridiculous. The man has an obvious passion for film, writes excellent reviews, & truly cares about the articles he writes by writing them in a distinct voice instead of copying & pasting from other news sites.

The only reason people hate Matt is that he’s insanely harsh on movies he doesn’t like, and lets you know it. But that’s a coin with two sides, because when the man loves a film, he will not stop gushing about it. It’s what makes his articles a joy for me to read, that genuine love of cinema as an art form, as entertainment, and as a means of escape.

So he doesn’t like the movies you do? Tough. Fucking. Shit. Please just grow up & stop acting like he has personally offended you with his opinions.

I know there are many more people who read these articles than those who post, but those of you who derail conversations (and I know that by responding, I’m not helping anything out, but I felt like I needed to finally speak my peace on this) because you don’t like what he has to say are the only part of this website I don’t like. I like the articles, I like the interviews, I like the reviews, I like the occasional Editorials, & I love the occasional “Movie Math” post. I like to see conversations about film news or just film in general grow in the comments. What I don’t like to see is a bunch of Internet trolls spewing their anger all over a well-run & well-written site.

There is nothing wrong with expressing different opinions, & there is nothing wrong with discourse & disagreement. Hell, without differing opinions, we would stay stuck in our small little worlds & never learn. But the methods you use to voice your displeasure have become unbearable.

Hell, you’ve gotten to the point where you jump up and go crazy at every article the guy writes. Have you even read this article? I mean seriously, what opinions written up there do you take issue with? That he hates Skids & Mudflap? Who doesn’t? That the humor in the second two movies didn’t appeal to many viewers? That’s a common complaint! That the first movie had some delightful moments? Many people think that. This article is so devoid of any sort of snark that I don’t see anyone taking offense with it. Except for thise Anti-Goldberg trolls.

So please, get over yourselves. You’re not going to get him fired with your YouTube levels of hate. You’re just going to get yourselves all worked up into a frenzy & keep throwing the comments section off. There have been multiple occasions when I wanted to comment on an article, but the idiocy made me think twice.

This is a good site, and I will continue to frequent it for quite a long time, but I have a reality check for you:

It’s not Goldberg that ruins articles on this site, it’s you.

Normally, I like to stop and consider my opinions so that I say the right thing and type something intelligent and measured, but since iamtryingtobelieve has already done that I’ll simply say,

      “fuck you Fale”

PS – you spelt your name wrong and don’t come back saying that you were being ‘ironic’ because you’re not smart enough, you’re a wanker.

  • Neo

I am looking forward to this.
Transformers movie series certainly doesn’t have any artistic value, and surely isn’t candidate for Academy Award (except for technical categories).
BUT IT’S FUN! It makes kid in me to have fun, like I had 25 years ago, when I played with original Transformer toys and wondering how could they look on film.

  • ScaredForMovies

I don’t question the action sequences in these movies. What I question is the heart. The Optimus Prime I grew up with would never have killed Megatron in the cowardly way he did in Dark of the Moon. Bay and his writers just can’t get a grasp on anything but the action sequences. After all it was Michael Bay himself who said that Transformers was a stupid idea. Now he’s forever going to be linked with it. Hopefully the shift to a transformer point of view will help but I won’t hold my breath.

  • Leo

The only person who i really want to come back is Tyrese, he is the only actor who truly showed a passion for the film and really seemed to have a passion for transformers from his youth.

Also if they could get a small cameo out of John Tutorro, I think that could be hilarious.

But mostly as a huge transformers fan i will say this.

FUCK YOU HASBRO YOU BUNCH OF FUCKING ASSHOLES WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU SPEND A YEAR TEASING US WITH PICTURES AND TINY RELEASES OF SOME OF THE TRANSFORMERS TO COME WHO WERE EASILY THE BEST OF THE DARK OF THE MOON LINE AND THEN JUST CANCEL THE RELASE ALL TOGETHER FORCING US TO ORDER THEM FROM ASIA FOR 3 TIMES THE PRICE.

FUCK YOU HASBRO, FUCK YOU LONG AND HARD.

    • jack

@leo…if you’re this pissed off about a line of toys you have some serious issues…how old are you? grow up

  • ozzie

movies really make people angry … or are the people just angry before they get here?

    • Sccitylhh

      Bingo

  • Jay

This movie is a terrible idea.

  • sheldon

this is a bad idea to have a whole new cast , most of the time when that happens it’s means that the show or movie’s will come to it’s end . i would still watch it because i do like transformers . i do hope they can get at least a few of the former cast to come back .

  • Mr. Raptor

Isn’t it obvious? Its gonna be on Cybertron and about the war there.

It is a very bad idea to replace all cast in transformer 4. I want to see all former cast in transformer 4. I think Sam will play a big role in Next Move. I want to see more Autobots on earth. The character of agent Marry was horrible.

  • tanya

I will not watch Transformers 4 if the original cast is not in it. The cast members do make the movie. I think it will suck big time if there are new cast members! I think another Transformers movie is a mistake anyway, you can only watch so much of it. The third one was good but I probably wouldn’t watch it again. There is such a thing as too much action and no story.
