Paramount Eyeing a 2014 Release for TRANSFORMERS 4? [Updated with Details]

While a fourth entry in the Transformers franchise is all but inevitable, the question as to who will be directing/starring/writing has yet to be answered. Despite previous comments to the contrary, Michael Bay was rumored to be returning to the destruction robot series back in December. The director quickly responded to the rumors, saying “I’m not sure what I’m doing,” adding that the only solid film on his schedule was the small budget crime comedy Pain and Gain. We’ve heard nothing affirming or flat-out denying Bay’s involvement in the meantime, but now it appears that Paramount may have a 2014 release date in mind for Transformers 4. [Update: Quotes from producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura regarding the release date and story approach to Transformers 4 are now included after the jump]

[Update 2: Michael Bay is confirmed to direct and the film will be a reboot. Read the full story here.]

tranformers-4-movie-imageNews of the release date comes from Coming Soon, who adds that while Paramount is looking at 2014 for the T4 bow, Bay’s involvement is still unconfirmed. It’s not unheard of for studios to stake release dates for projects that are still in the nascent stages, so this news isn’t exactly shocking. The previous three Transformers films have opened towards the end of June or beginning of July, so a June 27th or July 4th 2014 release date seems likely. One imagines that if they’re looking at release dates, Paramount must be at least somewhere in the director search. No word on whether that’s Bay or someone new, but I’m hoping Bay steps aside and makes way for a fresh take on the series.

Shia LaBeouf is out and there’s no telling how many (if any) original cast members will return for a fourth go-around, but the story was already running on fumes by Revenge of the Fallen. I’m not sure there’s much left with the franchise’s original characters, and a reboot with new characters and a new director might be the way to go. In any event, should this report turn out to be true expect to hear some firm news on the follow-up soon. Coming Soon also notes that Pain and Gain (Bay’s passion project) is on track to start filming in Miami in April with Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg.

transformers-dark-of-the-moon-set-photo-michael-bay-01[Update: Quotes from Lorenzo Di Bonaventura have been added to CS's story, and we've included them here. Here's what he had to say regarding the release date and the possible return of Bay:

"We’ll be there in the summer of 2014. Michael had a debate because he sort of felt at first that he'd done three. Michael and I are both the same in that we always like to top ourselves. That doesn't necessarily mean bigger. It can be bigger in places, it just means different, but we're going to push really hard as fresh and new as we can be."

Regarding the story, di Bonaventura says they plan on taking an approach similar to G.I. Joe: Retaliation:

"We're going to try to do a hybrid there where there will be some characters that come forward--we think, we're still in the process of figuring it out--and some characters that don't, but it will definitely be a different story."

I feel this is a smart approach, as the franchise is in dire need of freshness. Again, hopefully we'll hear more (especially clarity on Bay's involvement) soon.]

Michael Bay is confirmed to direct and the film will be a reboot. Read the full story here.

How bout instead of continuing this Bay makes Bad Boys 3? what say you?

  • mattedscreen

“I’m not sure what I’m doing,” – Believe us Michael Bay… we’ve seen your movies and know that already. Glad to hear he’s come to terms with his limitations.

    • Jeff T.

Damn, the haters are getting dumber and dumber. That’s all you got, mattedscreen? Come oooon, you can do better than that, pal – spread more hate, be more annoying, come on. Of course, don’t expect people to take you seriously.

By the way, I’ve seen all of Bay’s films, and I think he’s one of the greatest big-budget directors of all time. And no, you can’t prove me wrong, because I’ve been following his career for 15 years now and I can easily defuse all criticisms coming from insignificant bloggers, bandwagon haters and 80-year old critics.

And a free advice for you, mattedscreen: don’t talk for other people. There’s no “we”, unless you represent some sort of organization. There’s only your own completely subjective opinion.

And opinion is not a fact. Try to keep that in mind.

      • Jordan N.

His “we” can include me as well, so it is apropos. Bay hasn’t done a good movie since “The Rock”, which was his first, if I recall correctly. Everything since has been the same schtick over and over: incomprehensible action scenes, juvenile humor, horrible dialogue, all wrapped in a threadbare plot.

Curious rant, btw. Calling out someone for being a hater while clearly exemplifying what makes a hater in the first place. Kudos to you.

You should take your own advice: opinion is not a fact. Try to keep that in mind.

You’ve seen all of his films and have followed his career closely? Maybe that explains why your brain has turned to mush. The fact that you can say he’s one of the best big budget directors is so incredibly laughable. Better than Spielberg or Peter Jackson? Either of the Scott brothers? No. Fuck, I’ll take Roland Emmerich and Paul W Anderson over that talentless hack. The only directors worse than Bay are Uwe Boll, Stephen Sommers, and anyone that directs under Platinum Dunes’ productions (which, yep, is owned by Michael Bust A Big Explosion Nut Bay). Christ, do yourself a favor and NEVER try and defend Michael Bay again. Keep the fact you have horrible taste to yourself, people may actually start to like you.

Frosty, keep these hacks Adam Chitwood and Matt Goldberg away from the site. Trust me, no one likes these tools and their annoying articles———-no wait, they’re not even articles. Just a bunch of crap that’s representing the opinions of two lame bloggers who actually believe that the entire world agrees with them.

They have NO idea whatsover how to present the news. 10 year old kid would do a better job. No, I’m not kidding.

P.S. Chitwood, they’re not going to reboot Transformers, no matter how much you whine. Paramount made it clear that they’re NOT rebooting the franchise. Why?

Because people like it the way it is. You’d know that if you don’t spend your entire life on the web, where only haters and critics talk about movies. Go out and see the real world. And you’ll thank me later.

God this makes me wish the Mayans are right and 2012 is the end of times…

  • Jay

PLEASE DON’T MAKE THIS FILM….DO something else Bay…let the transformers go on a hiatus so people actually wan to see them again.

  • Brian

Could we get a director, not just a guy that likes to blow stuff up for this one.

  • Nomis1700

If there really has to be a TF4, PLEASE NOT BAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make a fantastic script, hire a talented director, get real actors and the movie really doesn’t need to be 150 minutes once more.

I know it will make money anyway but come on, the movies suck in quality, a lot.

  • rinzler

I really like transformers 3. I think the first two where crappy. But I think they got the third one right(compared to the others). It’s the only one I can watch over again.
