Paramount has released a Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer for director Michael Bay’s fourth entry in the action franchise.  In the movie, Mark Wahlberg plays a burgeoning inventor/family man who runs into trouble when he accidentally discovers a beat-up Transformer.  This trailer probably gives us an accurate idea of the movie since it doesn’t make any sense.  It starts off by being excited about the physics of the Transformers, and then goes in a completely different direction with Optimus Prime saying that humanity faces a grave threat, and the only way to save the day is to ride around on a robot dinosaur.  I thought I would at least be amused by this trailer, but the franchise just feels incredibly stale at this point.  I don’t see anything here that’s worth being excited about.  For all of the CGI wizardry, the only moment that caught my eye was when a guy took a tire to the face.

Transformers: Age of Extinction also stars Jack Reynor, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Sophia Myles, Li Bingbing, T.J. Miller, Han Geng, and Titus Welliver, and opens June 27, 2014.  Watch the new Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer after the jump.

Here’s the official synopsis for Transformers: Age of Extinction:

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION is the fourth film in director Michael Bay’s global blockbuster franchise. The film begins after an epic battle that left a great city torn, but with the world saved. As humanity picks up the pieces, a shadowy group reveals itself in an attempt to control the direction of history… while an ancient, powerful new menace sets Earth in its crosshairs. With help from a new cast of humans, Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) and the Autobots rise to meet their most fearsome challenge yet. In an incredible adventure, they are swept up in a war of good and evil, ultimately leading to a climactic battle across the world.

    Love it. ;D

Couldn’t say it better. I got lost at “This is going to change physics.”

    OH MY GOD!

  • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

@mattgoldberg:disqus – stop using your brain when it comes to these films. You are suppose to leave these films with a slightly lowered IQ. And comes off as “stale?” Hardly since it’s a mind numbing film that’s not desinged for your average thinking Joe (most of ‘Merica!). My suggestion: sit back and relax as you let the stupity of robots riding dinosaur robots ooze over your mind as Marky Mark and his Funky Bunch save mankind. Come this 4th of July I promise that you’ll feel the vibrations that he was singing about.

“stop using your brain when it comes to these films.”

And this is why people think Americans are dumb.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Also why a lot of Americans actually are dumb.

      • Land of the Freezer Foods

and also y alot of Americans r dum!

      • James Franco

        True that. Fuck White America!!!

      • Werefon

        Dave Franco is better.

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

Umm yea I was being sarcastic as this movie looks ridiculous in all the worst ways. At least Goldberg appreciates the diminishing quality that these films bring. My vote is I’m going to be giving this two thumbs up in the “Most Craptacular” sequel section.

      • GrimReaper07

It didn’t sound that sarcastic since people use that argument for real lol

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

        That is true lol.

Who says he is American? Assumptions will get you nowhere.

actually the majority of the box office for these kind of movies are foreign. you throw any dumb US cgi in a movie and foreigners will eat it up.

IF I see this movie, the vibrations I’ll feeling will be coming from the power drill I am wielding to give myself a makeshift lobotomy and make the pain stop.

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

I just hope Bay at least uses Good Vibrations as the theme song and can incorporate it into the soundtrack like he did w Linkin Park. On another note, for some reason people are reading my post as if I’m being serious. It’s Michael Bay we’re talking about here and my name’s not Frank.

      • OMG

ENOUGH with that Mark Walberg joke that you found online sed by 4 million people before you…give it a rest

    • The Flobbit

IF I see this movie, the vibrations I’ll feeling will be coming from the power drill I am wielding to give myself a makeshift lobotomy and make the pain stop.

    • The Flobbit

Also: when did Simple Jack turn into a brooding Ben Affleck?

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

Long story short: a friend of mine had a child born with a mental condition and it made me think twice about finding humor in those situations.

      • The Flobbit

Well a friend of mine had his parents shot in an alley as a boy and dressed up as an bat to fight crime at night. That is so much more serious.

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

Hahaha I thought this picture would help show my sad emotions that I was feeling.

    • Mixofgoodandbad

Please STOP using that EXCUSE for these shit movies!!!! they are simply NOT.GOOD.

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

Read the sarcasm remark above. That’ll help avoid these awkward situations.

  • DjangoBro

This looks almost exactly like Dark of the Moon… even down to the last shot of Optimus slicing and dicing his way through Decepticons. The only difference is different actors and Dinobots. I thought this was suppose to be completely different?

    • cb

And how about those vacuums sucking up everything? What was that movie’s name. . . . skyline?

  • Shawn T. Nicholson

There goes Matt Goldberg being all negative again! If you can’t get excited about movies then why do u write for a movie news website?

    • Spanky

You expect someone to be excited about this kind of crap?

    • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

If you *can* get excited about Transformers movies, you should be castrated. That’s not an opinion, that’s been proven in Scientific American.

      • The Flobbit

However, before Bush could pass this law we got Obama. Otherwise we’d have a crowd of castrated teens clogging up our insane asylums.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Don’t be absurd, Bush didn’t pass laws based on Science. His laws come from the gut. Also, I’m okay with insane asylums clogged with castrated teens, as it means no one’s around to buy tickets for Transformers 4.

      • The Flobbit

My mistake. Scientific American is an oxymoron.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

I love how you picked teens as the group you think see these movies … I’m betting the demographic is older people trying to recapture their lost youth … most teens I know are more intelligent than the commenters here.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Nah, it is teens. Most teens have a hard time getting into R-rated movies, can see movies on their parents’ dime, and usually haven’t seen enough movies to understand that CGI isn’t enough to make a movie good. Some understand this and some pay for their own movies and thus are more discerning, but the vast majority don’t.

      • eternalozzie

Lex doesn’t spend much time with teens apparently.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Actually I do, hence my prior comment. Nice response lacking any formal argument or substance, though.

it’s hard to be positive about this movie – it really, really is.

    • axalon

I love Goldberg’s posts, he seems to be one of the few people who actually dislikes the consistent lowering of the bar.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

He just doesn’t want to deal with James Cameron’s smug self-satisfaction when he has to take a submarine to the depths of the ocean to raise the bar back up. It doesn’t matter if James Cameron doesn’t do what James Cameron does for James Cameron, because James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is James Cameron, it still sucks to be indebted to him.

I am not even sure they have a script.
Zero story + CGI-porn. So another Bay flick.

I liked the first, hated the second, thought the third was “just fun” but I am having the hardest time building any kind of enthusiasm for this one. Even when it’s shot in Detroit(grew up near there) I still don’t have much desire to see it.

    • The Flobbit

I hated the first, hated the second, and rank the third somewhere between dog excrement and Amish romance fiction in my esteem, so my enthusiasm is at this point so low it is actually hovering on the opposite side of the world, somewhere in the South China Sea.

      • MJ

Well, thank God you have that wonderful live action Cinderella show to look forward to, and are so excited about. Bring your mom!

      • derek

There are better movies made in the South China Sea. I will still probably watch this on the web.

    • Monkeygirlfetish

NO!! STOP with that INTERNET TREND of saying the second one was BAD,…they are ALL SHIT none of them have been good tranformer movies…..or even good movies at that

      • milo

Agreed, I’m kind of shocked that people consider the second one “the bad one” considering how absolutely horrendous the first was.

Hated the first, haven’t had any reason to watch any of the others.

  • The Destroyer

I would rather watch a two hour long movie of Mark Wahlberg playing with Transformers toys, and voicing all of the toys himself. They could call it Marky Mark and the Transformers Bunch.

    • The Flobbit

I would rather watch a two hour movie of Nicolas Cage sitting in front of the camera, on a white background, blinking sporadically.

I would even rather watch a four hour existential non-narrative film about sand dune ants in the Kalahari.

  • JudgeMethos

    Grimlock breathes fire now?!

  • JudgeMethos

    Grimlock breathes fire now?!

  • DEADP00L

Well at least we got more Transformers in this trailer than humans. But I’m pretty sure we’ve all seen the entire movie now.

  • Cale

It looks better than 2 and 3, but maybe not as good as 1. I thought 1 was pretty good.

  • JBug

For me, Transformers never gets old.

  • SuperBuckeye30

I wonder what Matt Goldberg is like as a person? Judging by his posts, he always seems to be having the worst day of his life. Cheer up, Matt!

  • Jonze

I hate the Transformers series and this doesn’t look to sway my opinion in a positive direction. Looks cool but still seems to suffer from a dumb-looking plot and most likely that Bay-humor. I can enjoy dumb action movies when they know what they are, dumb action movies. Transformers, to me, always felt like it was trying to be more than that. They always seem to be dark and gritty but come off as illogical and just stupider. They should be bright, dumb action films. The positive news I guess is Orci and Kurtzman didn’t write the film, so there’s that.

  • Josh

I think I’ll pass on this one. Looks horrible.

  • Ramone

CRAZY idea: what if someone made a Transformers movie where the robots were discernable from one another and there were actually robotic “characters” that developed along a “storyline”. Can you imagine??!!

    • Clay

I’ve wanted that for a long time, but something tells me it wouldn’t work with this incarnation of Transformers, even divorced from Bay. It’s EXPENSIVE to have these transformers on screen, and featuring them consistently in the story would probably make this the most expensive movie of all time. That being said, I would love Spielberg to take a crack at directing a movie. He used to play with the old toys with his kids when they were growing up. I think he gets what made them so special.

      • DEADP00L

        Not if you mocap them

      • Clay

Wouldn’t matter. You’d get better fluidity in movement perhaps, but you’re still looking at a ridiculously pricy visual effect any way you slice it.

Source: I’ve worked on motion capture films for the past 6 years.

  • Person

Yeah screw all the haters, this looks flat-out amazing. I go to these movies for dumb fun and robots kicking the shit out of each other, and this series about to be 4-4 in delivering the goods.

    • mattinacan

      dumb is right

    • The Flobbit

If by goods you mean juvenile, tasteless, cliched, insipid stupidity, then yes, they deliver in spades.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

I don’t think he meant that, but I like your definition more.

      • MJ

It’s just a kids show, like ASM. Relax

  • MJ

Kind of funny. Everybody on Collider supposedly hates Transformers so much…yet, we have 60 people who have watched the trailer and posted here within 2 hours of this article going up?

    Bit of a disconnect.

    • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

Because we love to hate Bay’s Transformers ^^

    • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

Michael Bay is Collider’s version of Kim Kardashian. We just love to hate him and yet they still make a shit ton of money every year.

      • MJ

How can we work Kayne into your analogy?

      • The Flobbit

Michael Bay is also Kanye. A man with an ego so large it shines through the camera.

god damn Michael Bay. for all the man’s faults as a story teller he sure can create a spectacle
