Who’s ready for 10 more years of Transformers movies? We know that Transformers 5 is on the way with Michael Bay and his team expected to begin production in June 2016 and that Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari were recently recruited to pen the script for an animated feature that’ll serve as an origin story and take place on Cybertron, but Hasbro Studios president Stephen J. Davis just revealed that there’s a whole lot more in the works.
While speaking at MIP Junior in Cannes (via CS), Davis broke down the Transformers film franchise plan:
“Well, you’re gonna see a new Transformers movie coming from Hasbro and Paramount and Michael Bay and our other partners. In fact, we just finished, which some of you may have read, just an incredible experience. We decided that we wanted to plot out the next 10 years of the Transformers franchise and so we got together in a room over a three-month period of time. Nine of some of the most creative writers I have ever worked with, shepherded by Akiva Goldsman, who many of you may know won an Academy Award for A Beautiful Mind and written a bunch of really great movies, and they plotted out the next 10 years of Transformers. Similarly, we’re doing the same in television and in digital. So stay tuned, Transformers 5 is on its way, and 6 and 7 and 8.”
I cringe at the thought of a Transformers 5 and beyond, but despite the rock bottom reviews, the Transformers film franchise has certainly earned this type of expansion at the bank. The two most recent installments, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: Age of Extinction both cleared the billion dollar mark at the worldwide box office. However, 10 years of Transformers movies still seems like a lot.
I’d like to bet there are folks at Marvel and DC who are talking about what’s happening in 2025, but discussing it behind closed doors is different from outright announcing it like this. When news first broke that Bay, Steven Spielberg and Lorenzo di Bonaventura put together a writer's room led by Akiva Goldsman with Robert Kirkman, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, Zak Penn and Jeff Pinkner on the roster, it was likened to James Cameron’s Avatar writing team so I envisioned them coming out with a couple of sequels. Ten years worth of Transformers movies is a different story.
