Like many other websites, Collider received a package this morning from San Diego and inside were two coins and a flash drive. As you can see, the coins are related to the movie "Tron" and they say 'Flynn's Arcade' on one side and 'Home of Tron' on the other. Since Disney is promoting the sequel to "Tron" at this year's Comic-Con, this package can only mean one thing: something very special is being planned for convention goers and these coins are the key. Also included in the mailing was a flash drive. When I booted into my computer, all that was on the drive was a small image that you can see below. Since many other websites got similar flash drives, I can only assume all of the codes need to be put together to make whatever they have planned work. It could also be we need a primer and it will be revealed during the "Tron" presentation on Thursday morning.

But the big thing I'm curious about is these coins. In the first "Tron", Flynn's Arcade was the place where Jeff Bridges character lived. It played a big part in the movie and arcades of that fashion have long disappeared from the cultural landscape. So you have to wonder, why would they include these coins along with the flash drive.

Here's my theory and it's only a guess.

I think the possibility exists that Disney is going to recreate a portion of Flynn's Arcade at Comic-Con and these coins are the way in. Mind you, this is just a guess and maybe the coins are to throw us off from the flash drive. But if Flynn's Arcade is in San Diego, I'm going to flip out like a ninja.

Finally, if you're thinking that the Arcade is somewhere inside the convention center, it won't be. When studios do stuff like this, it's always somewhere in the gas lamp district. And with the "Tron" presentation scheduled for Thursday morning, I'd imagine whatever surprise is in store for all of us, it's Thursday night or Friday night. You know, because Thursday isn't crowded enough. You can be sure I'm going to try and figure it out and to be safe, these coins will be in my pocket the entire time.

This year's Comic-Con is shaping up to be one hell of a ride.

UPDATE #1

Since posting the story a few hours ago, the website flynnlives.com has been found. On the bottom of the site, there is a spider moving around. If you click on it a timer pops up and the clock is counting down to 9:30pm on Thursday night. I guess that's when the viral "Tron" campaign begins at Comic-Con.

The other cool thing about the site is that it tells us what happened to Flynn since the first "Tron" movie. I love the way they're taking the real world and mixing it with the world of "Tron". Awesome stuff. I really suggest checking out the site for yourself, but here's what it says:

1990 -- Sightings of Kevin Flynn by ordinary citizens, including high-credibility "Level 3" sightings of Flynn in NYC's Central Park during a Shakespeare Festival, on the fringes of a San Francisco street fair, and the notorious "Elvira" sighting of Kevin Flynn at Halloween celebrations in West Hollywood, California. Unfortunately, these initial sightings display certain characteristics true to this day -- nothing has been confirmed and photographic evidence has been lacking.

1992 -- Sightings continue. Several of us make contact thru Usenet and begin correspondence.

1994 -- First Flynn Lives! meet-up in Dayton, Ohio. We resolve to continue our efforts to find out the facts behind the mysterious disappearance.

1998 -- Letter from Kevin Flynn to a founding member of the group gains media attention, then debunked. Founding member (now ex-member) checks into a mental hospital for observations.

2001 -- A $5,000 award is offered to anybody who can prove Kevin Flynn is alive. By December 31st, alas, nobody had satisfied our jury and the money was spent on a great party for all of the "Troniacs" we know and love!

2002 - 2005 An era of low visibility for our group. Sightings drop off, and interest seems to slacken. Thank heavens that is over!

2007 - Interest picks up as the "Albino Cow" Flynn sighting in southern New Jersey energizes a new generation of activists.

UPDATE #2

Matt here.  So if you look at the back of the coin, you'll notice that it says "Home of Tron" and commenter SLPSTRM provided a link in the comments section to homeoftron.com which features testimonials about Flynn's Arcade and says January 15th, 1990 is the day that fans of the arcade gathered before it was closed.  This lends credence to Steve's theory that the arcade itself will be somewhere around the San Diego Convention Center.  But where?!

Well Peter at /Film may have figured that out.  He tracked his envelope to a location close to the convention center.  We got our envelope from the same place.  Again, Steve's harebrained theory that a real-world Flynn's Arcade is going to be somewhere around Comic-Con.
