Two New Featurettes for TRON: LEGACY; Film Currently Tracking for a Soft $35M Opening Weekend

Disney has released two new featurettes for TRON: Legacy.  One featurette centers on the film’s villain, “Clu”, who is played by a digitally de-aged Jeff Bridges.  As Olivia Wilde exclaims, “I couldn’t believe it!  We get double Bridges?”  Every film should be so lucky.  The other featurette is more of a broad overview of the characters and the vehicles.  Neither featurette really spoils anything (or at least nothing that hasn’t already been glimpsed in the trailers), but if you need your TRON: Legacy fix (and I know you do), then hit the jump to check them out.  Also, after the jump we’ve included a report on how the film is currently tracking soft at the box office right now.

TRON: Legacy opens in 3D on December 17th.

THR is reporting that the film is tracking “soft” right now and is headed for a disappointing $35 million opening weekend.  That would be a major blow to Disney, who have reportedly spent $200 million on the production (not to mention the costs of their massive marketing campaign).  The film has to open at at least $50 million to  be on the path to profitability.  However, this number doesn’t factor in international grosses and how the film is opening on December 17th in most of the world.  But perception counts and armchair execs will label the film a flop if it doesn’t have a stellar opening weekend in the U.S.  Since I don’t own Disney stock, I couldn’t care less how the film does at the box office.  I just want to enjoy it as a movie.

Here’s the official synopsis for TRON: Legacy:

TRON is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (GARRETT HEDLUND), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (JEFF BRIDGES), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (OLIVIA WILDE), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

the marketing is crazy with this movie. Besides the first trailer I avoided any footage so far, successfully! But it’s itching like crazy to press that play button!

    T-16 days!

I guess 35 mill. sounds about right to me, maybe more towards $40 will hopefully be more realistic.
Other than that I can’t wait, all the waiting is almost over!

    end of line

UNLESS the reviews for it SUCK like under 70% I think it’ll do well over 35 mil, every single geek I know is salivating over this and the fact its 3D is a bonus so Im bettin it’ll be a sellout..

The biggest challenge with the marketing here is the title. All the cool visuals don’t detract from the main issue: this is a sequel to a 28-year-old movie that the general non-geek public remembers as a mediocre novelty, if at all. This movie should be airing non-stop on cable with a front and center DVD/BD pre-holiday release. Disney is basing the marketing on fuzzy memories and 3D FX money shots. Depending on the geeks to carry the day at the box office rarely works out well; perhaps they don’t see the irony in marketing squarely to a vocal minority that knows the right way to illegally download movies. Ask Edgar Wright and Universal how that worked out for them, and they didn’t have nearly as much riding on “Scott Pilgrim”. Even though rumor has it that none of the marketing has yet even hinted at the film’s third act, Disney is still going to have to find a better marketing technique for the general public, and fast, or else lose their asses financially and suffer the indignity of getting whooped by Harry Potter AGAIN.

I agree, the story, plot and it’s characters are still a complete mystery. And most people assume including myself is because it doesn’t have any and it’s your average corny shallow special effects movie.

This is no Avatar which had revolutionary technology and James Cameron at the helm.

I guarantee that this movie will be a “disappoint” in theaters but will have a long life after its theatrical run. In a way, it’s a microcosm of “Tron”: it’s life will thrive in the digital world.

Whatever, this film will open higher than 35 mil. For a start there has been no reviews, no word of mouth, nothing. Online movie nerds can’t seem to ever get the fact that they don’t dictate a films success, the general movie going public do. So far they know very little about Tron, and they won’t until reviews and word of mouth hit when it’s released.
It’s very similar to Avatar last year, the bulk of Avatar’s audience had no idea about it until it came out. Tron will be similar. How well it ultimately does will be up to the movie itself, but general audiences won’t care about it until they can actually go out and see it.

Opening weekend is cool and all, but its the 2nd and 3rd weekends that will prove how well this film will do.

Mr. Goldberg hit it right on the head when he wrote Since, “I don’t own Disney stock, I couldn’t care less how the film does at the box office. I just want to enjoy it as a movie.” Stop, stop, stop with this obsession with box office grosses. None of us will ever see one nickel of that money. Just give me a cool fucking movie.

THR is really wrong on this one. Tron will open to atleast $45mil. Probably more like $55mil when all is said and done for the opening weekend. But the real answer will be like CashDaddy said, how it performs over the Christmas week and New Year.
