Tron Legacy will feature five scenes in full IMAX 3D when it’s released December 17, according to Slashfilm. Much like The Dark Knight and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen before it, the film will blow up from the regular 2.35:1 aspect ratio to a 1.7:1 aspect ratio for several scenes. It should be the first 3D film to do so.
Though event films are being released in IMAX more and more frequently, rarely do they use the giant screen to its full 1.43:1 advantage. The films are just a bigger version of the same movie with huge sections of the screen still black. That’s because, in order to be full IMAX, the filmmaker needs to shoot scenes with the much larger IMAX camera and it gets extremely expensive. So far, only Nolan and Bay have done it for their aforementioned mega-blockbusters. Even James Cameron’s Avatar didn’t go for the full IMAX. (Though, that wasn’t because of budget. Cameron doesn’t like the ratio.)
Hit the jump for some educated guesses as to what scenes will be blown up and also for a list of other films being released in IMAX in the next few months.
The scenes that will be given the IMAX treatment have yet to be announced but, if you read about the Tron Legacy trailer event that happened over the weekend, it’s evident that this sequel to the 1982 classic will have plenty of candidates. There are at least two light cycle sequences, the second of which is basically a lock. The disc game is also another one that will probably be blown up and surely something with the iconic Recognizers. Do any of you have guesses?
Either way, with its full IMAX scenes Tron Legacy has distinguished itself in the hotly contended battle for time on the few IMAX screens across the country. It’s going to be crazy with Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon, Hubble 3D, Toy Story 3, Inception, Iron Man 2 and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse just to name a few, all being released in IMAX soon.

Sounds great!
To bad their is no movie Imax screen near me; 3 hours away…
Still gonna kick ass though!
End of Line
I just hope that the IMAX work is as extensive as The Dark Knight's. I felt totally cheated with only one full IMAX scene in Transformers (bouncing back and forth every few seconds in later scenes hardly counts).
