We learned earlier today that Vince Vaughn is in talks to star in True Detective season 2.  A new report from The Wrap surfaced tonight and suggests creator Nic Pizzolatto is close to firming up the rest of the cast.  Vaughn is in talks to play the central antagonist.  Colin Farrell is reportedly nearing a deal for the older male lead, while Taylor Kitsch is the frontrunner for the younger male lead.  Elizabeth Moss is under consideration for the female lead and Michelle Forbes is in contention for a key role.

The report also expanded on the previously reported True Detective season 2 plot details, provided character descriptions for the above roles, and mentioned a candidate to direct some episodes.  Hit the jump for more.

true detective season 2 posterThe Wrap offered this season 2 synopsis:

“The second season of True Detective will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt City Manager of a fictional California city who’s found brutally murdered amidst a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change the freeway gridlock in California.  Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it.  They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought.

Caspar’s 52-year-old corpse is found on a lonely stretch of the PCH near Big Sur—his eye burned out, genitals cut off and satanic symbols etched on his chest.  It turns out he had a penchant for rough sex and may have been involved in the Occult.”

Although the casting isn’t official yet, here is the The Wrap’s rundown on the characters these five actors would play:

  • Vince Vaughn – “Frank Semyon, a former thug turned businessman who’s working with a local Mayor and his political cohorts to spearhead the construction of a high-speed railway system that links southern California to northern California in order to reap financial gains from federal grants and land purchases.”
  • mad-men-season-6-elizabeth-mossElizabeth Moss – “Ani Bezzerides, a tough, no-nonsense Monterrey sheriff whose troubled upbringing has driven her to gambling and alcohol.  She reports to Sheriff James O’Neil and Deputy Sheriff Marla Simenon, and her partner, Elvis Ilinca, may have a crush on her.  Ani also has both a hippie-type father who was absent when she was growing up, as well as a younger sister who isn’t afraid to show off her body.  She’s also looking into the disappearance of former classmate’s sister.”
  • Colin Farrell – “Ray Velcoro, who has been damaged by years of turmoil in both his personal and professional lives.  A barely functioning coke-head with anger issues, he’s on Frank’s payroll and is battling his ex-wife for custody of their only son, Chad.”
  • Taylor Kitsch - “Paul Woodrugh, a handsome, 28-year-old military veteran who has seen his own share of violence and destruction.  He’s a motorcycle California Highway Patrol officer who’s put on leave after soliciting oral ex from a beautiful girl he pulls over for drunk driving.  He reports to Commander Floyd Heschmeyer and has a Latino girlfriend he breaks up with when he’s assigned to the Caspar investigation.”
  • Michelle Forbes - “It’s possible she could play either Farrell’s ex-wife (a survivor of sexual assault) or Vaughn’s charming but mercurial wife.”

Amid the season 1 acclaim, True Detective was criticized for weak female characters.  Moss is the perfect antidote, demonstrating in Mad Men and Top of the Lake her chops as a strong female lead in a boy’s club setting.  Forbes, too, would be a wonderful addition.  If this ends up being the cast, the men may have more star power, but the women are more talented.

The Wrap also mentions a rumor that HBO approached Andrew Dominik to direct some of True Detective season 2, but Dominik may be too busy preparing his Marilyn Monroe movie Blonde to join the fun.  In case Dominik does sign on, get to know the director through Evan’s in-depth look at his filmography.

For me, True Detective is much more about execution than plotting, but I invite you to dissect the new plot details to your heart’s content in the comments.

Everything about this casting news sounds amazing… except for the Vince Vaughn part. Vince Vaughn is all-kinds-of wrong for TD2.

    • LEM

It’s a strange choice given his track record for serious roles or even comedies lately but maybe he can use it to turn his career around.

    • YodaRocks

I have a feeling that he’ll in fact turn out to be the strongest of them all.

    • Frank

I honestly think Pizzolatto’s writing could make even Adam Sandler work in TD.

    • Idioteque…

Vince Vaughn is eons better than the twat Taylor Kitsch. One of the worst actors ever.

      • Matty

At least you’re aptly named. Do yourself a favour (or not) and watch FNL, Lone Survivor, or The Normal Heart.

I have jackass. He’s awful but why would i care for your opinion when my username went over your head.

      • Matt Hood

Your username is a reference to Radiohead. One of my favorite songs ever…

I don’t think so. He can be fine in dramas…and he never had great drama material to work for. Casting him as a bad guy could actually be pretty great.

Hope this reignites Taylor Kitch’s career. Thought he did well as gambit and am a big fan of Friday night lights and he did what he could with John Carter.

      Battleshit, don’t forget that.

NO. I’m trying so hard to forget that movie. Please let me.

Any word on what decade it will be set in? I am assuming the present but I really dug the 90s setting of the first season and was hoping they could do California in maybe the 60s or 70s

    • Strong Enough

      Its set in 2456

    • Fastballz

They could set it around the same time as the Manson murders

    get the fuck outta here.

people forget just like John C. Reilly Vaughn started off as a dramatic actor

    • brNdon

Exactly! It seems most people here think that Old School was Vaughn’s first movie.

I’m well seasoned. And I recall his former dramatic career…just have never found a liking to Vince Vaughn….everyone has their opinion, and to me, he has very limited range…however…many people have felt that way about McConaughey. But he has com back as of recent and truly proven himself. Especially with true detective season 1. If Vaughn can step up the same way, I down to see him do it. Good luck Vince.

  • Doot

Gotta love the irony here: a “meh” male cast (and even a poor choice as far as Vaughn is concerned) and a KILLER female cast (Forbes was mind blowing in Battlestar among others and Moss is an obvious choice considering Top of the lake).

    • Pernell Whitaker

      Where is the irony??

    • Pernell Whitaker

      Where is the irony??

      • Doot

Maybe “irony” was a poor choice of words… the article actually sums things up much better than I do : “If this ends up being the cast, the men may have more star power, but the women are more talented.”

      • Pernell Whitaker

Agree that irony wasn’t the right word. Disagree that the women are more talented. It wasn’t long ago Matthew Mcconaughey was a laughing stock and would’ve been derided in the same way Vince Vaughn is here and now, he was always a great actor but just made some terrible script choices – same goes for Farrell and Kitsch imo. Not taking away from the ladies, cause they are also very talented.

      • Anonny

Like it or not, with Kitsch & Vaughn there is more uncertainty. And I’d say that Vaughn is a strong comedic actor who sometimes phones it in – I wouldn’t say he’s a great dramatic actor (not yet anyways).

Just because one year from now we may be singing Vince’s praises does not mean that Doot’s comment is incorrect.

As of right now, Moss & Forbes & Farrel are proven exceptional dramatic actors and you can easily see the 3 of them knocking it out of the park. So right now, yes, I’d say that the females as a group have more proven talent than the males. Not only that, but they are more consistently good than the men.

      • lord jim

moss is overrated.i find it ironic that the best performance in a feminist series (top of the lake) was clearly a man – peter mullan, while hunter was overacting and moss was just boring.

    • Farrell

Colin Farrell is meh? And Vince Vaughn has some pretty good dramatic acting chops…he didn’t start out doing just comedy. Taylor Kitsch is pretty good too, he’s just been given shitty films. I don’t think Pizzolatto, a very talented man would hire meh actors when he could get just about anybody he wants.

  • bidi

you come for the plotting, but stay for the execution. it has an uphill battle, but here’s to hoping that season 2 is as good as season 1

  • Hunter

This is a pretty solid cast to me. Including Vaughn, which i may be in the minority on. I’m excited to see what he can do given darker material.

    • Puroloek

Vaughn was really creepy in “Domestic Disturbance” from all the way back in 2001, so I can see it working out.

It’s funny; I was only saying to someone a few days ago about how Vince Vaughan is a far better actor than he’s allowed himself to be, then this news appears. It seems people are convinced he’s of no cop at all, but they’re wrong, and I’m pleased he’s finally doing something again to show what he’s capable of.

Farrell’s gonna’ be brilliant, as he often is, but rarely gets credit for. I suspect Kitsch will remind people that he is actually talented. Moss has proven herself repeatedly, and you can never go wrong with Michelle Forbes.

The off-beat casting and the bare bones plot provided all sound good to me. Lookin’ forward to it…

Holy fucking shit, can’t wait. Love the potential plot and left-field casting choices, especially Vaughn and Kitsch. This could really open a lot of doors for them as dramatic actors. Colin could get the career and artistic boost that he’s needed for a while too. Throw in a couple of fantastic, reputable television actresses along with Pizzolatto’s writing chops and potentially Andrew freakin’ Dominik??? Yes, yes please.

Taylor kitsch is a terrible actor. His bad dramatic skills alone made me walk out of John. Carter. Let’s be honest, if he were not a “pretty boy” type Hollywood never would have given him the time of day in the first place.

It can’t be me who thinks the synopsis sounds 100% parody.

    • Redjester

It doesn’t sound parody to me, but I hope this is the last season of the show dealing with Voodoo or Satanic stuff.

Hopefully Season 3 involves a different type of serial killer more in the vein of Seven, Silence of the Lambs, The Zodiac, or even Dirty Harry.

Vaughn seriously?! Yuck! I don’t like it at all! I can’t imagine him in the True Detective world, even if it’s in a different setup from season one, but I’m definitely on board with Farrell, Kitsch, Moss and Forbes.

    • Redjester

Couldn’t agree more. I hope Vaughn takes James Franco’s class for ‘How to Act Gooder’ before filming begins, or better yet an actual acting class lol…
