Netflix has released the trailer for the final episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which amount to the final seven episodes of Season 4. The half-hour comedy launched back in 2015, before Stranger Things and the deluge of buzzworthy content Netflix would drop on us in the ensuing years. At that time, shows like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black defined the streaming service, and Kimmy Schmidt—which was created by 30 Rock showrunners Tina Fey and Robert Carlock—was a big, unique, exciting addition to Netflix’s original programming slate.
Four years later it remains one of the best things Netflix has ever released. Fey and Carlock brought their signature goofy sense of humor to the story of a former kidnapping victim (Ellie Kemper) who spent most of her adolescent life in an underground bunker, only to escape and move to New York to finally start her adult life anew. While the humor throughout Kimmy Schmidt is hilarious and ridiculous and downright insane sometimes, Fey and Carlock have always kept it rooted it Kimmy’s emotional trauma. Indeed, at heart Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a survivor’s story, and while I’m sad to see it go, I’m looking forward to seeing where Kimmy lands.
Season 4 was split up so Fey could launch Mean Girls on Broadway, so that’s why we’re now getting “the final episodes” as opposed to a full season. Netflix released the first six episodes of Season 4 last May in order to qualify for Emmy consideration.
