UNCHARTED Movie Release Date Set for June 10, 2016

     July 23, 2014

Sony’s adaptation of their best-selling video game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune has been in the works for years.  David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) was attached several years ago, and after he left the project, Neil Burger (Divergent) stepped in, but he eventually dropped out as well.  Earlier this year, director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) signed on to direct, and last week he said he hopes to begin filming in early 2015.  Now, THR’s Borys Kit has tweeted that the Uncharted release date will be June 10, 2016.

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, it follow treasure hunter Nathan Drake, who is the descendant of famous explorer Sir Francis Drake.  The games carry a blockbuster attitude as they take the player around the wisecracking, Indiana Jones-inspired protagonist around the globe to find fabled cities like El Dorado and Shangri-La.  The Uncharted games are pretty much interactive movies if movies featured a hero who killed hundreds of people and had incredible dexterity.  They’re really fun.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer for the first game.

“if movies featured a hero who killed hundreds of people and had incredible dexterity.”

Wait, are we pretending that action heroes (John McClane, Rambo, etc.) don’t kill hundreds of people? Maybe not in one movie, but that’s pretty much expected.

Hundreds? they must be playing easy difficulty.

I would have never guessed that the directors of YOU, ME and DUPREE would make one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen (Winter Soldier) but who at Sony thought the guy who makes great documentaries and lame comedies would be a good fit for an Indiana Jones blockbuster like Uncharted? I still don’t get how Mark Webb got tapped to reboot the Spider-man franchise.

This will suck and have little more than name and character connection to the great series of games. The worst part is if they did it right they could then do Uncharted 2 which is really amazing.
