Universal and MPCA Knows Broken Lizard Are a Bunch of ROGUE SCHOLARS

broken_lizard_image.jpgI’m a huge fan of the Broken Lizard bunch and while I’m still upset that I still haven’t seen their latest film, The Slammin’ Salmon, I’m happy to hear that Universal Pictures and Motion Picture Corporation of America have picked up two projects from the group.  The first project is called Rogue Scholars, which THR says is a “college comedy revolving around five unruly professors played by the members of Broken Lizard — Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske.”  Details of the second project are being kept under wraps and both are still in the script stage.

The Broken Lizard films (Super Troopers, Club Dread, Beerfest) don’t tear up the box office, but they do well on DVD and build up a cult following.  I put Super Troopers on my Top 20 of the 2000s list because it’s so quotable and never gets old.  Hopefully, this is where the group turns a corner and finally gets their work out there in a big way.

This mirrors the same situation that film/television actors have always had with the producers of their films/shows. Unless they have a piece of the “back end” written into their contract, most actors don’t get residuals from their classic films/shows. While I detest the dictator Hugo, I applaud Sheila Jackson Lee for standing up for performer’s monetary rights. The NAB is greedy with a capital G. I urge Congress to support the Performance Right Act.

Broken Lizard is awesome. I loved Super Troopers and always get a kick out of Club Dread (It is the best murder-island-stoner story out there), I wasn't as big a fan of Beerfest but I'd gladly see any of their films in theaters.

I too hope they get more financial reimbursement and recognition in the mainstream.
