Following the proclamation from the Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, that he’s ready to head back to acting, studios are now interested in resuscitating the Terminator franchise. Apparently, Universal is interested in restarting the blockbuster franchise (yet again). Deadline reports that the studio is looking for a new project for director Justin Lin (Fast Five), and they have their eye on Terminator.
The film franchise has been dormant since McG’s lackluster reboot in the form of Terminator: Salvation in 2009. The franchise was left in limbo after ending up in bankruptcy court, where Santa Barbara-based hedge fund Pacificor won the rights, thereby negating any future plans McG had for his trilogy which will now thankfully never see the light of day. It’s important to note that Universal hasn’t officially made a move on the franchise yet, and Lin isn’t guaranteed to direct if they do, but this is what the studio is thinking at this time.

Ugh. Terminator ressurrection is a good thing. I’m all for that. But Justin Lin as director? Not so much. There are so many other new directors out there that could do a better job. Duncan Jones, Matt Reeves, Shane Carruth, Neil Blomkamp etc. Why Justin Lin? If he has to direct they better get one hell of a screenwritter. Bale and Yelchin better be back as well.
Justin Lin as terminator director, heck no. With greatest respect for him, the fast and furious franchise with him directing isnt good (he is responsible for the worst one in tokyo drift). Him directing a big franchise like the Terminator is just asking for trouble.
For me, get Neill Blomkamp or J.J Abrams. I also think Arnold’s too old
I liked Terminator Salvation (except for the awful ending) and I’m sad to see that McG won’t be coming back to direct. In the BD-Live screening he was very humble, and seemed genuinely enthusiastic to learn from his mistakes and make the next Terminator film even better, it’s a shame he won’t get that chance.
As for Justin Lin… no, just no. If people thought McG’s Terminator film was bad, at least he tried to make it serious entry that respected the franchise. With Justin Lin, all we’re going to get is more stupid action schlock on the same lines, if not worse than T3. And I agree with John here, Arnold’s simply too old to be the Terminator anymore.
I hope that whatever Universal decides to do, they don’t completely throw out what was done in Terminator Salvation, I hope they continue to use Bale and Yelchin.
I personally think that Terminator Salvation was far more superior than Terminator 3, McG did a fantastic job, Cristian Bale and Sam Worthington were great additions to the series.
I agree.
Loved worthington in this movie along with Bale and Yeltchin.
Everyone knows this movie bombed because Bale had his blowup. I didnt fault the guy, actors can be intense and a$$holes, get over it the movie was decent..
Skynet was obviously the villian which I thought was a high minded plot point for the usually dumbed down blockbusters.
The movie had its flaws but I sure as hell enjoyed it a lot more then Transformers 2, I wish McG would have directed that. His “transformer” in Salvation was pretty awesome..
some people cannot appreciate a movie for what it is.. I am so over all these reboots and remakes, its sickening.. Arnie will suck if he comes back to the franchise. T3 was a SCYFY special for sure..
terminator salvation was better than T3, i’m ok with that but mcg did a fantastic job ?? HELL NO
as much as i love terminator franchise i need to say that it’s dead unless james cameron will be back
and we all know that’s not going to happen so..
justin lee haahha
@ fabrice
To each their own my friend.
If this stays then the franchise goes down the shitter,
ha ha yeah let the guy who directed the fast five touch a huge franchise
COME ON!!!!!!!
They should just let this franchise die. TERMINATOR SALVATION sucked.
Adam, I don’t understand. What didn’t you like about salvation. The ending was a little bland but other than that, I thought it was a worthy film. At least much better than T3. All that was, was a beat ass fest with no story!
Please tell.
why??? haha although you know what, go ahead… do your best, cause seriously… its disgusting how relevant and beautiful and just brilliant T2 is… when they make these shitfest sequels, it just makes T2 stand out even more… cause don’t tell me the whole scene starting from the Galleria to the L.A. empty river chase sequence doesn’t just throw chills down your spine…even after 20 years.
@Brandon.
This is why Terminator Salvation sucked: Who’s the main character? Who’s the main villain?
the answer to both questions are the same… there are none.
It USED to be Marcus that was the main character. A bold move from the screen-writer, but then it got botched as someone thought it’d be better if John Connor had more screentime, thus all his scenes are basically pointless.
And what is a main character without a good villain? So the villain is a video of Helene Bonham Carter which we get to see for 3 minutes in the end?
So: No main character, and no villain. Half baked, and shitty movie.
Umm you must not have seen any of the Terminator movies. SKYNET is the villain, a self aware computer..
Pretty easy to answer dude.
And if you know anything about the movie, Bale actually turned down the role of marcus and scaled back the parts with John Connor (bale) to focus on the story of Marcus, which like you said, is a bold move.
I can remember many movies where the antagonist and protagonist end up working together to defeat the common enemy. One can argue Connor was the antagonist because of his blind hatred for the machines and did not see Marcus’s value.
The movie was decent, the only problem was casting Common for some thankless role.. I dislike the first one now knowing they are not continuing this story..
I will not see another Terminator movie with Arnie or Arnie clone (Conan).. congrats Universal you killed a franchise with the Tokyo drift guy
Well not a fan, but I still found Salvation to be entertaining, any rube would now the main villian of the movie was SkyNet. Eat your heart out John Wayne.
T3 is the only one that sucked. They better not remake em
I understood the entire take on terminator from all u guys. First Arnold shouldnt b back as T-800(i mean machines dont age & with entire aged look arnie will require loads of makeup or Facial CGI the one we saw in TRON: the legacy for Jeff B). Second one more movie needs to be made to end the franchise in RESPECTABLE way, since t-salvation wasnt enough (i think we all know that). Third A renowned director should be appointed McG was good, if they find anyone better its good or otherwise McG should be continued. And then finally Fourth let terminator RIP
I personally think they that the man who started it all James Cameron should reboot it and throw a new spin on it
Sorry about the typo LOL I meant to say I personally Think that they should give it to James Cameron and let him reboot it with a new spin on it with the technology he used for avatar
Terminator: Salvation was not a reboot… McG sucks… the story was good but the film was, like T3 half cooked and lacked heart…
P.S. McG sucks…

A healthy suspension of disbelief is necessary for the Terminator franchise–it’s got more plot holes than Charlie Sheen has binges. Bringing back Arnold would be the biggest plot hole of them all. Either Skynet decided to make an older looking version of the T-1000, because it was his age, not the fact he was jacked, that made him suspicious. Or he’ll play the real life man that the T-1000 was based on, which would be more plausible, but still patently ridiculous. Why not have Arnold’s Terminator actually be a scientist who the Terminator was based on–but he’s not a Terminator, he’s a Highlander from another dimension that has aged because he hasn’t killed anyone for awhile (a la Highlander 2), who is also a master of magic (a la Highlander 3)? If you want to completely destroy your franchise, study the best: Highlander.
I never saw the forth Terminator. I think Hollywood needs to come up with something else. Seriously. They like Robocop or Terminator, do somethinglike it. You’d be surprised what you can by doing old stories a bit differently.
