The Weinstein Company has released a new clip from the comedy Vampire Academy. Adapted by Daniel Waters (Heathers) and directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), the Richelle Mead novel series follows Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch), a bodyguard for her best friend and Moroi vampire princess, Liss (Lucy Fry).  The pair faces the dangers of St. Vladimir’s Academy while navigating forbidden romances and awkward social situations.  This clip is incredibly promising, and I particularly like the snappy dialogue.

Hit the jump to check out the clip.  The film also stars Olga Kurylenko, Danila Kozlovsky, Gabriel Byrne, Sarah Hyland, Joely Richardson, Cameron Monaghan, Sami Gayle, Claire Foy, and Ashley CharlesVampire Academy opens February 14th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Vampire Academy:

‘Vampire Academy’ tells the legend of Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch) and Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry), two 17-year-old girls who attend a hidden boarding school for Moroi (mortal, peaceful Vampires) and Dhampirs (half-vampire/half-human guardians). Rose, a rebellious Guardian-in-training and her best friend, Lissa – a royal vampire Princess – have been on the run when they are captured and returned to St. Vladamirs Academy, the very place where they believe their lives may be in most jeopardy. Thrust back into the perils of Moroi Society and high school, Lissa struggles to reclaim her status while Rose trains with her mentor and love-interest, Dimitri (Danila Kozlovsky), to guarantee her place as Lissa’s guardian. Rose will sacrifice everything to protect Lissa from those who intend to exploit her from within the Academy walls and the Strigoi (immortal, evil vampires) who hunt her kind from outside its sanctuary.

My problem with this whole concept: What the hell do vampires need human body guards for? Aren’t vampires super strong? And heck, both Underworld and twilight have made a point about vampires being stronger than even werewolves . . . .so what da fuq?
I’m sure this movie is going to attempt an explanation just like New moon tried to explain how the hell can NEW vampires be stronger than older vampires (barf) but i’m pretty sure its going to be just as annoying.

their bodyguards are dhampirs… half human/half vampires they are stronger because they have the qualities from both species and don’t get hurt by the sun. strigois vampires are stronger even than the morois, the morois are only ‘weak’ because it’s a toboo in the society that they can’t use their magic elements as offensive ways.

It’s that kind of exposition-necessary mythology that tends to turn me off to franchises like this. Morois, strigois, dhampirs, etc. – it’s just a lot of overly self-involved world-building that makes me want to roll my eyes. It’s less obnoxious when it’s read, but you just know some character in the movie will have to explain that to an audience stand-in character who dumbly asks “What’s a dhampir?” and it’s when that dialogue comes around that movies like this are hard to bear. That’s just my personal hang-up with this kind of young adult franchise though.

      • Roll that D20, sucka

It’s like explaining the rules of D&D, in movie form!

It is often times done horribly, but it’s fun when it’s done correctly. I love films that can convincingly (key word there) sell their wacky mythology. It’s the difference between New Moon and Warm Bodies. The zombies inherited memories when they ate their victims brains. It was convincing in that universe and was well-used to move the plot forward. Warm Bodies was so much better than it had any right to be.

Warm Bodies is a good example, the premise and trailers looked bleak, but that was fun even when it was kind of obvious. There are good ways and bad ways to catch an audience up on a world’s rules, and more often than not movies take the easy/bad way. It’s a shame.

Dracula the novel probably started the whole ‘bodyguard’ thing.
