Though the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing, the 73rd Annual Venice Film Festival has come to a close. So while we continue to bring you reviews and news from TIFF, we're happy to supply you with a list of winners from Venice, a list that's full of both familiar names and titles as well as those you may hear more of come Academy Awards time.
The festival's major prize went to Lav Diaz, a writer/director from the Philippines, for his film Ang babaeng humayo (The Woman Who Left), inspired by Leo Tolstoy's short story "God Sees the Truth, But Waits." The best director award was split in a tie between Andre Konchalovsky and Arnat Escalante, but the Jury Grand Prize and Special Jury Prize recipients may be the most recognizable names on domestic shores. Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals won the Jury Grand Prize while Ana Lily Amirpour's The Bad Batch earned the Special Jury Prize. Emma Stone also won the Best Actress award for Damien Chazelle's upcoming film, La La Land.
